Dark red-amber with a long lasting head and thick lace. Solid sweet caramel malt with overtones of sorghum molasses and biscuit. As it moves through the palate a smooth floral hop bittering provides a cleansing balance. At the finish, sweetness re-emerges. An excellent beer.

First tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in April 1991. Cask, gravity dispense. Clear reddish amber in colour with a thin white head. Slight treacle toffee and roast barley in the short but pleasant aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts deliver a good maltloaf body with sultana fruit, dates and sweet soft toffee notes. Dry hop prickle in the brief aftertaste but this soon fades to reveal a warming alcoholic malty finish with a dry liquorice edge. An excellent English Strong Ale and very hard to find north of the border.

Bottle at home. Dark ruby brown with a small head. Woody chocolate malt nose, hint of caramel. Sweet malt front, red fruit notes and a slightly spiced coffee finish. Pretty decent.

Bottle. Clear dark toffee with a good coat of beige head. Very fruity aroma with some cocoa and toffee, nutty Sherry. Slightly oily body. Sweet dried fruit and toffee, dry woody finish. First few sips I was thinking around 2.5 but this really grew on me as I drank it. Gets no favours from being bottled.

Bottle. Chestnut with a fine beige skim. Aroma a bit Old Peculier; varnished wood with hints of liquorice, dried milk powder and muscovado sugar. Flavour of burnt Twiglet, liquorice, brown sugar, slightly leathery, doppelbock-like malt. No hops. Tasty.

Clear, medium-dark ruby red-brown with an almost white head, good UK pint bottle. Hated the stupid monkey on the label. A great bitter aroma. Sweet, not heavily bittered, raisiny-vinous notes. Bitterness kicks in during the finish. Medium to medium-light body. Bitter ale, light cereal, prunes in the finish. Chanís Wine World, Panama City Beach, FL.
