Bottle. Pours lightly hazy brown with a medium, bubbly off-white head, medium-short retention with light lacing. Aroma is cobwebs, dirty cellar and root vegetables with cookie and cereal malt, and notes of old, weathered linen. Flavor is light malt, hops and bitterness with moderate dirt and earthiness and a dry finish. Medium-light body and light carbonation.

For the record: my bottle carries the name of Monkey Wrench Dark Ale
Dark red-foxy beer with medium yellow-beige head. Lots of caramel, treacle even, tinge of moccha, and as the Bitter just tasted, green leaves. Sure it’s one of the typical UK hops. Sweet, portwine with definitely oxydized (malt) notes (strange, as the beer is given good for another 6 months). A bit of treacle, watered down to the limit, molasses. Roasted, certainly, but I’m still looking for the fruit. Unless they mean fruit as they mean "Cadbury’s", when they say "chocolate". Watery syrup. Slight burning in the end. Rather poor, compared to a good German Dunkles. As to "Strong"... All the same, thanks DanP. You sure warned me.
There must be something wrong in the UK. If a Yorkshire brewery calls its beer Leann these days,... Poor Paisley, I’d start having pity...

UPDATED: MAR 27, 2007 Dark chestnut colour. Sweetish malt aroma, but an unexpected (but pleasant) bitterness to go with the malt on the palate. Just a hint of licorice too. Quite clean and surprisingly easy to drink for a beer of this strength. In fact, if anything, a bit thin. (or, at least, thinner than anticipated). Decent, but not terribly exciting. A Mes rate: Gravicask at the Bricklayers.
Nice red brown colour but no head. Straight forward but nicely balanced malt and hops aroma. Alcohol shows in the mouth but in a really pleasing way. Creamy caramel malt, nice bitterness in the finish with some lingering vanilla after. An enjoyable all rounder.
