Tasty beer. Amber beer with a bit of red to it. Full malt flavor with mild hop bitterness and yeast flavors.

Pours a dark, coppery brown with a very nice, frothy head that diminishes quickly, but not entirely. The taste is malty, but doesn’t finish entirely clean. Very smooth, though, & enjoyable.

Bottle. Chestnut colour with a thick cream head. Aroma is malty, fruity, hoppy with brown sugar. Flavours are toasted sweet malts, brown sugar and caramel. The solid malts background allows this to get away with a lot of sweet elements yet still remain a drinkable and enjoyable beer.

Pours a clearish, vermillion/mahogany body, tarnished only by the presence of some odd, dusty particulate. A cream-colored head starts thick and fluffy and holds for many minutes. Alcohol and dark fruits dominate the aroma. Prune and plum with notes of dank greenery, thin brandy and vinous grapeiness along with some bittersweet chocolate late. Delicious malt-and-alcohol concoction... chocolate and toffee flavor, sweet and sour plum, jellied fruit candies, sweeter tropical fruits. Dry, full palate, finishing with grapeskin astringence. A very good Strong with some Old Ale leanings. (Cellared for 6 months, so that may have given it an edge.)

Pours mahogany into an English pint. Offwhite micro head with excellent retention leaves film as it slowly recedes. Roasted malt aromas. Upfront sweet creamy caramel which pretty much stays through the finish. Fairly one dimensional -- was hoping for a little more bite, but certainly was able to drain the glass quite quickly.

500 ml bottle, bought in Scarborough. Possibly filtered, but probably not pasteurised. ABV is 5.3%. As a cask ale it was voted "Champion Winter Beer of Britain 1998". Chestnut coloured beer, rich off-white to beige head. Very nice malty aroma with oaky and vinous notes, also caramel and dark fruits. Malty flavour with caramel, some raisiny and vinous notes, moderate hops. Moderate carbonation, soft mouthfeel. A pleasant beer to drink.
