How many dirty stinking apes does it take to throw a wrench in a bitter ale? Notes of chocolate and coffee, also looks like strong coffee. Nuts and raisins as well. Sweet flavor with caramel aftertaste. Very smooth, full bodied, and easy drinking. Needs more hopping, really more like a mild ale.

5.3% and not a bad beer but they have annoyed me immensely, if the monkey had been hanging I would have really enjoyed it but at the time I was too confused by the drivel on the label.
The label on the back claims that the beer was named for an old legend (to do with my home town), en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_hanger but it is obviously not, it is named after a type of adjustable spanner and nothing to do with the legend. I can not see why they even bothered printing it.

Dark red-amber with a long lasting head and thick lace. Solid sweet caramel malt with overtones of sorghum molasses and biscuit. As it moves through the palate a smooth floral hop bittering provides a cleansing balance. At the finish, sweetness re-emerges. An excellent beer.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 tombyars (1102) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - NOV 25, 2011
First tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in April 1991. Cask, gravity dispense. Clear reddish amber in colour with a thin white head. Slight treacle toffee and roast barley in the short but pleasant aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts deliver a good maltloaf body with sultana fruit, dates and sweet soft toffee notes. Dry hop prickle in the brief aftertaste but this soon fades to reveal a warming alcoholic malty finish with a dry liquorice edge. An excellent English Strong Ale and very hard to find north of the border.
