COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a very dark, rich and mysterious ale brewed to an ancient recipe dating back to Elizabethan times. Full bodied, malty with spicy overtones this complex beer is only brewed occasionally. Enjoy a bottle as the perfect end to a perfect meal.
The recipe for Morocco Ale is believed to date from Elizabethan times. Colonel John Grahme of Levens was a courtier to James II and the name ’Morocco Ale’ may have been associated with the dark Moors who came to the court when Catherine of Breganza married Charles II and brought Tangiers as part of her dowry.
Every May-time until 1877, the unique, dark, spiced Morocco Ale, matured for 21 years, was served at a great feast held in Levens Gardens. The guests were required to stand on one leg and empty in a draught a tall constable glass filled with ’Morocco’ whilst pledging to the ancient house "Luck to Levens whilst t’Kent flows"

Bottle 500ml. Great malt-driven ale, with nice hop balance. Aromas of caramel, milky chocolate, biscuit, and a hint of grass. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and long length. Palate is creamy, with a medium body. Dark brown, with a frothy head.

Poured a dark brown color with a medium sized light-tan head. Aroma has lots of spices and some scotch. Also caramel malts and dark fruit. Taste is slightly creamy and smooth with interesting fruit flavors. A good amount of ginger in the taste as well. The finish is a tiny bit watery, but it is well balanced. Nice caramel aftertaste. Overall pretty good.

[500ml bottle, The Bottle, York] Pours a deep, clear red colour with a thing white head. Aromas of dark stone fruit, blackcurrants and some malty notes. Rich dark fruit at first on the taste – reminds me of Theakston’s Old Peculier – although the aftertaste washes away into weakness. With a bit more alcohol to pick things up at the end, this would be really, really good. As it is, it’s not that bad at the moment [19042011]

17 April 2011, bottle. dark amber, clear, no bubbles. nose is meaty with a lot of black current lozenges. med body and slightly watery. interesting flavour. black currant lozenges (minus the menthol), spicy (cinnamon?) and a malty medicinal tone. okay. more interesting on the nose than flavour. it is like a heavy session ale.

Flaske: Brun klar øl med et fint tyndt skumhoved. Duften er krydret med ingefær som den dominerende part. Smagen er meget ingefær. Virkelig overraskende og lækker. Godt afbalanceret.

Clear dark reddish brown with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, caramel and heavy spicy - ginger. Flavor is rather sweet and light bitter. sweet and spicy finish. Ginger is really dominating this, and I never liked ginger in my beer. Otherwise there is nothing wrong. 150910

A Madeira-style beer in flavor. And it almost looks like a Madeira: It is brownish-dark and cloudy. The aroma is spicy, but indefinable. Strange dry-sweet taste, very rich, but not as interesting and mysterious as the text on the label suggests, unless "mysterious" means "hard to comprehend" and "different, but not refreshing. " Technically not a bad beer, just a little ... diffuse.

Pours like a cola, medium-brown color with large-bubble carbonated head. Taste is notable - there is the usual brown sugar-molasses-malt, but mixed in is a light but distinct taste of licorice. The finish is long and smooth. A good beer for after dinner conversation.

500 ml bottle. Rated @ 19.4.2009.
Dark brown colour with a small beige head. Light aroma of malts and spices. Medium sweet aroma of roasted malts, fruits and some spices like ginger. Medium bodied with a bit watery mouthfeel on the palate. Average.
