COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a very dark, rich and mysterious ale brewed to an ancient recipe dating back to Elizabethan times. Full bodied, malty with spicy overtones this complex beer is only brewed occasionally. Enjoy a bottle as the perfect end to a perfect meal.
The recipe for Morocco Ale is believed to date from Elizabethan times. Colonel John Grahme of Levens was a courtier to James II and the name ’Morocco Ale’ may have been associated with the dark Moors who came to the court when Catherine of Breganza married Charles II and brought Tangiers as part of her dowry.
Every May-time until 1877, the unique, dark, spiced Morocco Ale, matured for 21 years, was served at a great feast held in Levens Gardens. The guests were required to stand on one leg and empty in a draught a tall constable glass filled with ’Morocco’ whilst pledging to the ancient house "Luck to Levens whilst t’Kent flows"

Dark brown, foamy tan head. Nose is rather intrigueing: minty, leafy vegetal notes, parsley, cinnamon and something sweet and candyish. Body is also vegetal, finally after deliberating for a good 10 minutes I figured out that the dominant taste and aroma was curry. Various spices are present, leafy and minty notes are prevalent as well. Finishes with a light hop bitterness. A very interesting brew altough I’ve never been a huge fan of curry. Funny, I didn’t recognize ginger as playing an active role.

UPDATED: NOV 12, 2009 Sept, 2002 BottleThe ginger spice is the outstanding quality in this beer, though it does vary from bottle to bottle. Other flavours come through at different points, depending on the dispersal of the ginger in the liquor - generally dark fruits, marmalade especially, but plenty of malty sweetness and some interesting hoppy bitterness. The finish is extremely long and complex. [3.2]
Nov, 2009Cask, JDW Rochester Pleasant chocolately strong ale - this is a Strong English Ale, though I think that Americans might term it a Brown Ale. Lots of flavour and well balanced. A damn good drink. [3.6]

Very bizarre beer, I’m surprised this is not from the Williams brothers. Obvious cinnamon/ginger taste a little to dominant to make this a great beer.

Smells a bit wierd. Garnet colour with a creamy head, thick & smooth. Almost no bitterness & a bit of a ’tonic’ taste in the rich maltiness. It didn’t seem out of place. I liked it but I’m a malthead.

Kind of tasted too much like ginger ale, i couldn’t pick up much else, just ginger, a bit of malt and i really couldn’t detect much hops. This didn’t do much for me.

Ginger and cinnamon dominate throughout, deep ruby red with a short lived muddy brown big bubble head.dry spicy finish lingers long past its welcome.

Thick thick foam. Dark red, almost a purply brown. Interesting spiciness to it. I couldn’t recognize what it was while drinking it, but it was ginger. Very interesting beer to drink at room temperature.

Dark brown; ginger and dark malts (mostly coffee, but some vienna malt as well) join forces here. Fairly sweet beer, with the ginger playing the balancing role. If you’ve ever dabbled with ginger brown ales as a homebrewer (as I did), this is an example of how to do it right.
