COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is a very dark, rich and mysterious ale brewed to an ancient recipe dating back to Elizabethan times. Full bodied, malty with spicy overtones this complex beer is only brewed occasionally. Enjoy a bottle as the perfect end to a perfect meal.
The recipe for Morocco Ale is believed to date from Elizabethan times. Colonel John Grahme of Levens was a courtier to James II and the name ’Morocco Ale’ may have been associated with the dark Moors who came to the court when Catherine of Breganza married Charles II and brought Tangiers as part of her dowry.
Every May-time until 1877, the unique, dark, spiced Morocco Ale, matured for 21 years, was served at a great feast held in Levens Gardens. The guests were required to stand on one leg and empty in a draught a tall constable glass filled with ’Morocco’ whilst pledging to the ancient house "Luck to Levens whilst t’Kent flows"

Bottle thoughtfully bonused by the_epeeist. Pours dark brown with a rocky dissipating tan head. Smells of caramel, nuts, molasses, ginger, coffee, lots of spices. Every time I held this up to my nose, I picked up more and more depth. Tastes of chocolate initially before giving way to lots of spices and some nice nuttiness. Some candied fruit hints are also there. Mouthfeel is textured with a nice bite of ginger in the back of the mouth. Finish yields some peppery splashes. Extremely enjoyable.

500ml bottle. Pours a deep brown with red highlights and a foamy tan head. Beautiful lacing. Smells sweet and fresh on a little fruity bed. Aroma has a little chocolate and caramel as it warms. Taste is dominated by malts with a neat bitter orange flavour. I noticed a bit of a coffee bean aftertaste that was very very enjoyable. Full mouth feel, soft carbonation. Interesting and very nice beer.

Bottle 500ml. Great malt-driven ale, with nice hop balance. Aromas of caramel, milky chocolate, biscuit, and a hint of grass. Taste is sweet, with light bitterness, and long length. Palate is creamy, with a medium body. Dark brown, with a frothy head.

[Cask conditioned] This really is a fantastic brew with loads of spicy ginger in it. Dark brown coloured. Intense aroma and flavour. Long lasting ginger aftertaste.

Pint bottle. Pours to a deep copper color, with a soapy white head that fades, and a soft carbonation. The nose on this beer is interesting with aromas of sweet malt, fresh bread, estery fruit, and light spice aroma. The palate is soft, with good sweet malt and fresh bread flavors, paired with estery fruit, and a distinct flavor of tamarind. This beer finishes with more good sweet malt and fruit up front, then ends with spicy tamarind flavor that lingers. Interesting and flavorful beer. I really enjoyed this one.

Pours a dakr brown colour with a fair ammount of light brown head. A really rich aroma of various spices, I think I made out nutmeg and cinemon, but there were many others. A very strong flavour, again a lot of spice, some cardoman came to the for, but there was also a nice malty sweetness on the after-taste. A very nice and quite different beer. I’d really like to have it again!

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2008 Cask at the GBBF 05’, this is something else, rich, complex, aromatic and spicy beer, flavors of dried fruits, caramel, nice roasted taste of black coffee, cloves, cardamom and lots of ginger, some hop bitterness but the beer is quite sweet, unsusual beer, very very warming and tasty.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2006 Bottle. Poured a very dark brown, almost black. Scents of horehound, cinnamon, dark roasted malt. Flavor is one of a kind. It has a very herbal and spicy flavor with a bit of hop dryness and some amaretto notes, as well as tobacco and aniseseed. It’s a very unique beer and IMO underrated.

Opaque, mahogany hued, topped with bubbling, creamy tanned head. Looks lovely. Nose smacks of ginger from the start. Other spices may be in the blend, as well, but ginger is dominant. Spicy and sweet. Soft and sublime. Me likey. Taste it! Ginger blazes the buds right off, resting atop a tasty malty base. No hops to be tasted. Nothing else, really, besides the ginger. And the body is a bit light for my taste. Could be beefier, to suit me. But probably just right for others. Hurray for them! Supple on the tongue and easily sent down the gullet...for those who enjoy the flavor of ginger. If you’re not one of those, stay clear away and shut your wallet.

Caramel and Ginger aroma. Deep garnet colour with a small toffee head. Ginger, roasted malt and nutty flavours, followed by a most lovely bitterness. Terrific tongue tingle. An extremely fine beer.
