500ml bottle from LCBO in Thunder Bay, ON pours a dark brown color with a 2 finger white head that leaves some thin spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas are of chocolate, mild spices and aromatic hops. Taste is chocolate malty sweetness with some roasted barley and light hoppy bitterness and some unidentified spices. A very well done brew and highly recommended.

A clear dark brown almost black colored beer, with a thick beige head. The aroma of some sweet chocolate with ginger , malts and some spices. The taste of liquorice juice with some chocolate, spices with a bitter hops. The aftertaste is sweet of laurel with some long bitter notes.

Bottled. Dark amber coloured. DNse light brown head. Aroma of light roast, sweetness, fruits and some cocoa. Favour of roast, sweetness, spice .Mium bodied. LIght roasted and sweet end.

Tasted this in The Esquire House, Glasgow (JDW) in November 2009. Cask, handpump dispense. Dark ruby in colour with a tight creamy white head. Interesting complex aroma of spices, with nutmeg, cinnamon sandalwood and lavender. Rich creamy mouthfeel and superb lacing. Dark malts give a rich Christmas cake base with molasses, green figs, and damsons. Spicy hop resins gives a slightly bitter aftertaste but this is short lived. Malt returns in the smooth winey finish with alcoholic sweet sherry notes and four spice. A heavy and complex traditional Old Ale - not for a major session though! Interesting history behind this beer.

Bottle. Dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma of ginger, dark sugars, other hard spices - perhaps cloves, cassia, aniseed. Maybe even some mint. Taste is sweet and deeply but gently spicy. Quite rich but refreshing.
