Cask - West Gate Inn (JDW), Canterbury. Poured dark amber with a loose & frothy, one finger white head. Nutty malt & currant aromas. A caramel sweetness up front, some biscuit in the middle and a dry, short hop bitterness on the finish. Light to medium body with low carbonation. Light and fruity and a fair thirst quencher.

Bottle. Ludicrously described as "dark brown" on the bottle label, this pours a dark orange, with a thin white head that very quickly dissipates. Aroma is hops and fruit, chocolate. Bitter. Dry, dusty, dirty finish. Summer quaffing.

Bottle, from Rhythm & Booze Barton-upon-Humber. Deep copper gold, thin shortlived white head and low condition. Gentle sweet caramel and toffee in the nose, slightly thin and tinny in the mouth initially but some caramel sweetness returns, short finish with some gentle roasted barley bitterness.

500ml bottle (this is definitely not cask only). Pours a clear chestnut brown, with a small off-white head, which fades fairly quickly, but does leave some lace behind. The aroma is quite simple, but fairly appealing, offering a mix of toffee and light floral notes. It is not an especially hoppy bitter, although it does have some mild spice and floral hops up front. These give way to toffee and caramel malt notes in the body. A touch of citrus does come in towards the finish, joining the malt flavours. This is quite a straightforward bitter. It has all the typical hallmarks of the style, and does everything one would expect, and it is a passable beer. What it fails to do is go that little bit further to make it a really interesting bitter. Instead, it is a fairly simplistic example.

First tasted this in the Tap & Spile, Harrogate in April 1991. Clear light mahogany in colour with a thin creamy white head. Cask, handpump dispense. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Mixed malts give a rich maltloaf base with roast grain, treacle toffee, molasses, dates, and muscovado sugar. Slight hop prickle in the short aftertaste but this soon fades. Finish is again malty with strong smokey caramel notes. An excellent Brown Ale and well recommended.
