Sample at Winking Lizard. This Mead is a slightly hazy straw color with a minimal head and decent legs. Floral aroma with sweet honey and a bit of fruit. Full-bodied and sweet with flavors of honey, hibiscus and slight fruit hops. The finish is sweet and floral with a hibiscus and fruit aftertaste. Above average overall.

Though there is debate on proper drinking of mead, I find that it is best served heated to steaming and poured into a horn to be enjoyed momentarily. Chilled is good, but the aroma does not come to life until it is heated. Appearance is ideal, being called viking blod, it has a dark red hue. Taste is full of honey and hibiscus, and at warm temperature, the hop taste is missing, which is ideal for me.

May have gotten a bad bottle. It tasted sour and vinegary. It looked fine and was thick, like I like mead, but the taste I experienced was irredeemable.

Firkin at Belmont Station. My first journey into mead. Colour...golden amber with no head at all ( I suspect thats common for mead??). Nose...loads of honey and notes of spicy hibiscus, orange tea and booze. Palate...clean, cola and spice with honeyed sopapilla, hibiscus tea and spring Douglas fir needles. The mid palate is bright and tangy and the finish is long and deliciously sweet.

No head. Clear deep coppery body. Fruity alcoholic raisiny aroma with spicy cedar wood notes. Sweet fruity spicy alcoholic taste with cedar wood notes. Fullish body. Hot, spicy, flat mouthfeel. Sweetish spicy hot alcoholic aftertaste with wooden herbal notes. Long cedar wood finish. Interesting, unusual. Highly sippable, in spite of all the alcohol. (0.5l ceramic bottle, from Kihoskh, Copenhagen, a few years back.)

Used to get on draft believe it or not. Never rated for some reason. But it always poured a reddish gold with no head. Big honey aroma with some mild citrus and the hibiscus. The body was thick and oily but finishes dry in flavor due to the hops. Not very boozy but well done overall.

The first thing that I noticed about this was the container it is in; a nice ceramic bottle which just goes to show that appearances are important and the producers know it. Opening the bottle, I was greeted with a wonderful scent of honey first off, with lighter hibiscus and hop tones in the back. Finally, was the ever-present scent of alcohol, and since this is a 19% Alc/Vol beverage, it is no wonder why it is strong. Moving on to taste, the first thing I noticed was the sharp alcohol taste that usually dissuades me from most drinks with that noticeable burn. However, it hooked me in with the sweet after taste. Honey sits well on the tongue, circling on the palette with the hops and hibiscus playing the wonderful accompaniment. I can only imagine that this would be a perfect aperitif or a fantastic dessert wine, if used in the upper-class sense of dining.
