The mead part of this drink is excellent but the addition of hops really killed for me. As soon as I saw this and the fact that is the oldest surviving mead recipe I had such high hopes. Unfortunately these hopes were dashed away.

Bottle. Pours slightly hazy orange with no head. Aroma of honey, raisin and flowerish notes. Sweet flavour with a solid floral and ends up more dry, slightly bitter and with some warming alcohol. Full to medium bodiedand oily texture. A solid mead. ★★★

Pours clear reddish orange. The aroma has fruitiness from the hibiscus, honeysuckle, alcohol, orange, floral aspects and pleasing warmth. Thick slick lush body that coats the mouth. The taste has lots of sweet honey, bright hibiscus, rose petals, warm alcohol and a full lushness to everything. This is a very pleasant sipper of a mead. The sweetness is definitely there, but enough is around to offset it and not make it overwhelming. The hibiscus really pops out well. I’m guessing the hops are there more to offset the sweetness than to make themselves a noticeable taste. Really enjoy this one, but will probably take a while to get through the bottle.

Ceramic bottle, 19%. Sweet and alcoholic aroma. Clear amber colour. The flavour is sweet with some honey, a little spicy. Raisin finish, like Swedish gloegg, also some metal.

Smells like booze. Not in a good way. Taste is a lot better but not great. Sweet honey on the back end. Sugary finish. Not a fan.

Bottle. Pours clear butterscotch with no head and no lacing. Aroma is honey, strong flowers, a bit of bug spray. Flavor is very sweet, floral, somewhat odd, but certainly better than the aroma. Light body, no carbonation, strong boozy warming from ABV.

Served in a crooked stemmed martini glass, this projects a dazzling honey-water image conjuring up hearty viking celebratory repasts past. Delicate floral interplay of honey and rose water, and what might be hibiscus. Powder scented. Medium bodied, with a honey wine viscosity that soothingly blesses the lips and warms the palate. Some oxidated marsala-like notes contribute complexity.

Bottle shared at gnoff’s mead tasting. Pours clear beautiful amber. Aroma is cumin anis sweet nutty almonds marzipan and alcohol. Flavor is as aroma, vinous astringent and very fruity. Very nice but a bit too boozy.
