4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
7/24/04. Poured out of 22 oz. bottle, sampled at San Diego Barley Wine Tasting courtesy of SDbruboy 7/24/04. Pours an extremely dark brown-red with orange outline. Looks badass. Big, fittingly badass filthy bitter with strong twiggy flavors. Very silky mouthfeel, almost syrupy, and huge, bold flavor. Extreme stuff, and I quite like the ass kick that it delivers. Finish is long and dangerous. Bold and round, still big and go for a long, long time. Chewy, chocolatey, nasty, and lovely. Would love to age this one for several years. Very complex and potent stuff. Damn good barley wine.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Dark and murky red hued body. The light tan head is fine particled and clings to the glass sides. The aroma is cherries, sweet caramel, and some alcohol. The flavor is massive, with sweet toffee-caramel up front then some fruity hops and finally a dose of alcohol. The body is creamy but seems a tad thinned by the alcohol. The aftertaste is medium bitter and very warming. Knock about 2% off of the ABV and this would be a world class American style Barleywine. As it is the alcohol is a bit harsh, but I still really enjoy the beer. My gums are numb and I have only had a few sips! A million thanks to radiomgb for this surprise!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Strongly fruity, malty and sweet aroma, with heavy notes of plum, blackberry, dark brown sugar, currant and red grape and tinges of medicinal, peppery alcohol, dried flowers and old wood. Deep, dark garnet color, with a very finely-beaded, slight head. Flavor profile is sweet and sugary up front, becoming fruity and lightly acidic midway and with a bitter, profoundly warming finish that fades away revealing licorice tones. Palate is smooth and winey, body is massively full. The pouring of the relatively large dosage of yeast in the bottle contributes a pleasant spiciness. Reveals a mellifluous intricacy over time. Cheers to Psychprof for the chance to experience this rare Barleywine.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Extremely evident alcohol which made drinking this at room temperatures challenging. I realize that Michigan winters can be severe, but these guys need to learn balance or restraint or something. I think beer geek/hard liquor fans would enjoy this more than I did. Very warming, vineous and malty. Saliva-inducing for some reason.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Slightly hazy plum. Dying light tan head. Round, candyish wafts of black cherry, dried plum, and grainy Crystal sweetness. Faint notes of acidity, wax, cedar and dry chocolate. Very alcoholic. Fuzzy carbonation. Soft body. Quick rush of Crystal malts and subtle metallic tendencies. Brief earthy hops are muffled by the residual sweetness and spicy alcohol. At first glance it’s tolerably malty, but quickly becomes overly sweet and one dimensional. Finishes cloyingly medicinal, leathery, and sharply alcoholic as the sweet malts struggle to find their way through the jumbled alcoholic mess. The aroma’s decent, but the lack of balancing hop character combined with copious levels of alcohol and unfermented sugars beckons it to be served ice cold. Otherwise, good luck conquering even half the bomber.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark amber coloured beer with no head. The aroma is light roasted and hop. Bitter taste with the alcohol failry dominant. I like it. The taste extraction capabilities of alcohol must not be underestimated.
