Lothore (226), California, USA Jun 17, 2008 A- Pours a nice deep amber with a very small head that dissapates quickly. Crystal clear.
S- I could smell it from the second the cap popped (granted it took quite a while to get the cap off with all the wax!). My first impression is ... raspberries? deep brown sugar notes, dark fruits, alcohol, underlying sweetness.
T- This one is really a kick in the teeth in a good way. Starts off with brown sugar and roasted malt rounded out by sweet fruits, maybe subtle berry flavors. Sugar and booze on the tongue going down with a good dose of alcohol warming.
M- Thick and sticky with ample carbonation.
D- This is an excellent barleywine. I really wish I had another to lay down for a year or two. You definitely feel the 12 percent in this one. The prominent alcohol makes it a sipper but it forces you to savor it which I enjoy. Definitely something dark horse should be proud of.
daknole (641), Plantation, Florida, USA Aug 17, 2008 Acknud, you kick ass! Nice bottle here from a world class trader! Brown/amber pour with a little head. Aromas of raisins, molasses and strong malts. Flavors are sweet and hoppy...surprising at the least. I taste syrups and sugar and the alchohol is hidden beyond belief. polomagnifico (404), Saginaw, Michigan, USA Aug 15, 2008 Bottle. Aroma of dark dried fruits, caramel, wood, citrus juice, and sherry. Hazy deep amber brown hue with a small khaki head that mostly diminished and left some spotted lacing. Flavor is sweet caramel, raisin, sherry and finishes with a touch of bitterness. Palate is full bodied and oily soft. A fantastic Barely Wine with the best hidden 15% ABV I’ve ever encountered. This brew feels aged with the hops mostly subsided. Very good and very deadly. Adverse2Bitter (34), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Aug 10, 2008 As a self confessed Barely Wine freak and life long Milwaukee resident, I was pleased to pick up the 12once bottle. The title and the wax seals conjurers up images of a killer long lived work of brewing art. The reality is not to fare off.
Not as complex or as thick as some others. Brown sugar and baking spices come over the glass, but the beer is not very aromatic. Sweet! with low carbonation. Almost no hops. The alcohol is well hidden. A well balanced (boring) barley wine.
If you are looking for something’s really off the hock try the lighter but more hopy Pilgrims Dole from new Belgium or thicker almost Cognac like Dogfish head’s Olde School. Both have quality’s this one lacks.
Nice try Dark Horse
JMFG (1086), Florida, USA Aug 10, 2008 Courtesy RogueOne, 2008 release. Slightly cloudy copper color with almost no head. Sweet aroma with alcohol, burnt caramel, honey, raisin notes. Thick palate. Rich caramel malts, some spicy alcohol, a background hop presence. Sweet and rich, but not cloying to me. Would be nice to see how this does over a couple years. SuzyGreenberg (900), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 30, 2008 12 oz. (2008) bottle - thanks to pepsican for the hook up on this one; pours flat, dark ruby orange; mostly clear; aromas are a grainy, danky mix of fruit, sugar and alcohol; very strong and sweet with a level of sweetness along the lines of 120 min. or double tree; thin body, but a rich, creamy finish as it goes down; like a big punch in the face; wow
