12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, Winter 2012 bottling. Pours cloudy almost opaque dark reddish brown color with a small light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, dark bread, brown sugar, toffee, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, earth, roasted malt, chocolate, and light herbal. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and spice notes. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, molasses, raisin, dark bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, roasted malt, chocolate, toast, prune, earth, and light herbal spiciness. No bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, dark fruit, dark bread, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, roasted malt, chocolate, and herbal earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of robust flavors; with a nice malt backbone over the spices; and almost zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice winter warmer style. Very nice robust and balanced flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Keg at the holyrood 9a. Pours deep brown, nose is spiced chocolate and pumpkin, taste is similar.

Looking at it and smelling it, this seemed like a great idea...then I drank it. This tastes like oversteeped herbal tea mixed with cough syrup and a good IPA. Given that I’m not an IPA person, not my thing.

Dark brown pour, smells of boozy gingerbread. Tastes follow right along in the spice/molasses arena, but with a little hop bite at the back. Well balanced, a very good holiday beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 ounce bottle. Barely translucent dark brown color. Moderate creamy beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, molasses and nutmeg. Interesting roasted malt flavor has notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, clove and tart yeastiness. Rather sweet in the mid taste where the spices really come forward. Soapy hop finish. Overall, different, but good.

Bottle. Pours deep brownish black with medium caramel brown head. Aroma is very intense with notes of "Gammel Dansk" bitter, mint, licorice and coffee. Taste is medium to very bitter, medium sweet and light acidic. Body is creamy with soft carbonation. Finish is long and mostly bitter with notes that follow the nose plus white sugar, cardamom and mint. Very intense and complex but sickly atomistic if consumed in larger quantities.

Bottle from winter secret Santa. Surprised at low ratings. I really enjoyed this. Not much aroma oddly. Great taste closely resembling a Belgian. Dark fruits toffee with very smooth taste and warming finish. More please

Bottle poured into imperial half pint glass. Pretty beer. Smell of cinnamon, malt. Thin taste of leafy vegetables and a muddle of holiday spices. I’d blame it on the beer I had right before, except that the beers I had after tasted just fine.

UPDATED: JAN 8, 2015 Pours an opaque deep brown with little off white head and it’s gone in a hurry.....aroma of nutmeg, clove, sweetness......taste is peppery nutmeg, soured off into glop, then left with overdose of nutmeg on the tongue. Had high hopes at the start but they were dashed in a hurry.

Aroma: Definitely a good deal of nutmeg and clove; something that almost reminds me of soy sauce, but not in a totally unpleasant way. Still, kinda weird. Appearance: Smoky quartz body with a slightly foamy tan head that settles into a bubbly ring. Flavor: Pretty prominent soy sauce component with nutmeg coming out a little more than any other spice. Palate: Medium body, sticky texture, soft carbonation, long finish. Overall: Not totally dreadful, but not something I’d seek out again, either.

Sample. Dark brown color with thin head. Molasses and coffee aroma. More coffee taste, more like a stout, but enjoyable
