I was shocked at how much I would love this beer. I had Hobo’s Breath Brown Ale from Mt. Pleasant, MI a few weeks back and loved it but they were out at my favorite watering hole. This one tasted similar, with chocolate, caramel, nuts and roasted malt. But what shocked me was how smooth it went down and the excellent aftertaste. I would certainly recommend this if you can find this.

12 oz bottle served in a lager glass. Pours clear dark brown; translucent. Small, semi-durable head. Malty aroma with more complexity than evident in the flavor. The flavor is slightly bitter and a touch more dark roasted in flavor than average for style. In fact, there’s a faint touch of char that comes out in the aftertaste. Flavorful. Smooth, medium-full body with medium-light carbonation.

Tasting at Hackney’s Printers Row. A standard brown ale with an herbal, leafy hop note. Bit of tea and cola as well. Not very good, but I’ve been here all day, so maybe it’s better than I think. My palate may be fatigued.

Deep brown color and short creamy head from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma of slight caramel and roasted grains. Initial creamy mouthfeel followed by carbonation on the tongue.

330ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Deep muddy brown color. Medium size, beige-tan head, stays. Sweet, malty, caramel, mellow grassy hops in aroma. Nice malty roast, hazelnuts, sweetish, fruity hops in taste. Nice malts and hops in aftertaste. Mellow bitterness. Beautiful brew.

330ml bottle (Bierfox, Riga)
Lovely rich husky aroma, branny. Reddy brown, persistent tight beige head. Lovely rich malty body, classic US brown ale - rich malty and spicy too. Hint of nettles. Sweetish, but nicely attenuated too. Finish is nice and spicy, even reminds me of rye. Gentle dry leafy hopping. Lovely brew. This is why I like dark horse. This is a simple beer done very well. Totally shits on the boring English traditional brown ale formulations. Would happily drink a full pint and want to go back for another one. 7% - no way.

Pours a barleywine color with a very large caramel colored head. Cow tail candy and cola on the nose. Way over carbonated. Hard to drink. Cola flavor, some chocolate, too bitter for the style. This one’s ready for the drain.

Im Vergleich zu anderen Brown Ales durchaus akzeptabel, leicht keksig, angenehm im malzigen Bereich und zudem durchaus erfrischend und spritzig. Mild, süffig, alles ok hier.

Bottle from Rudat in Dortmund. The beer has got a hazy dark brown colour with a steady head and smooth body. Aroma of malt, cake and bread. Taste of malt, dark bread, caramel, leaves and straw. Hints of nuts. Nice one.

Older bottle bought online. Milky, irregular, coarse, off-white head over a clear, deep brown beer with warm ruby hue. The aroma is a treat for maltheads (as it ought to be in an American brown ale): chocolate paste, hazelnut oil, butterscotch, fresh toast, raisins, maple syrup, cocoa butter, candied orange, tea, marzipan. Soft sweet onset, candied dates, raisins, marmelade, countered by a very subtle berry-like sourishness; soft carbo, thinnish body as expected from the style, lovely smooth caramelly and lightly nutty maltiness with a chocolatey accent, a bit honeyish here and there, with more toasted bitterishness in the end as well as a spicy, herbal hop bitterness of medium duration; juicy caramelly and nutty maltiness persists as well as a subtle lingering candi sugar sweetness sticking just a little bit to the teeth. English brown ales are clearly in decline in their country of origin, but their American offspring is still going strong yet often a bit overlooked; I would recommend this to anyone trying to get acquainted with Anglo-Saxon brown ale in general. It is a typical example of its style, very malty but light and quenching at the same time, elegant, sweet and ’friendly’. It’s the lovely chocolate and marzipan qualities in the nose which make this appealing more so than the actual taste, but in all this is a very enjoyable Dark Horse beer once again.
