4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sampled at FoBAB2013. Pours oily and black, with a tan head. Aroma of strong bourbon, big chocolate, coffee, and roast notes. Some vanilla, some caramel, some wood and oaky notes. Flavor is big, boozy, thick. Tons of bourbon soaked roasted malts, lots of coffee, vanilla. Somewhat creamy, somewhat syrupy, lots of molasses, roasted malts. This is just exhausting on the palate. Kind of incredible mouthfeel, like the first time I had Dark Lord.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle: thanks to Jeff for my first bottle of this. Black hole black, thick pour, insanely dark, tan head with tiny bubbles forms slowly on top. Looks like 5W-20 that was due for a change 5,000 miles ago. Aroma is mind-blowing with the most smooth bourbon & oak character Iíve encountered. Heavy fudge & cocoa beans, vanilla, light coconut, smooth bourbon, wet oak & wood, deeply roasted malts, brown sugar, & a creamy coffee undertone. Distinct, wonderful, complex... The taste is no different. Creamy, smooth mouth feel with light syrup & sweet molasses up front. Warming bourbon comes through big, but is literally the smoothest induction of bourbon into a beer that Iíve tasted. Oak, vanilla, faint nuttiness, dark fudge, bittersweet cocoa, a touch of ripe dates, roasted coffee, a mild milkiness, & a good amount of brown sugar. Bourbon, oak, chocolate, brown sugar, & coffee in a lovely, mouth coating finish. The best bourbon barrel aged beer Iíve had, bar none. This is how itís done, folks.

Awesome. Really smooth, little burn, bourbon, sweet coffee and chocolate, vanilla. Pours black, tan head. Big chocolaty bourbon coffee aroma. Big body, small carbonation but works perfect. Nice sipper. Top BA imp stout for me so far.

UPDATED: DEC 1, 2014 12oz bottle In a snifter. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of bourbon, roasted malts, some oak and vanilla and light savory notes, a little coffee and chocolate, and some light bitterness. Flavor the same with a great blend of everything especially the bourbon. Smooth texture. A really good beer.
EDIT: Bottle with copper wax. Same appearance. Great aroma of bourbon and a rich stout. Thick texture. Still a really good beer.

Bottle thanks to fear025. I had a bunch written then the stupid RB app froze and lost my rating. Pours inky dark. Aroma of chocolate coffee vanilla roasted malts bourbon. Silky mouth feel the taste of the base beer is still there but slightly sweeter.

2012 Vintage 12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip.
Bourbon Plead the Fifth comes out of the bottle without any hurry, filling up my glass with an obsidian black liquid. Adjusting to an aggressive pour, I am able to encourage a small dark mocha head to form for a few minutes. It slowly gives way to a thin ring of dark froth around the edges and leaves just a couple spots of lace on the glass.
The aroma at this stage has such a nice balance between the the chocolate and roasted notes from the stout and the character from the barrel. It almost feels like rich fudge is entering my nose as first, with roasted notes, a bit of coffee, lots of vanilla, and finally a smooth bourbon note.
The flavor starts off with rich dark chocolate fudge, with vanilla and bourbon twisting their way in. As my palate adjusts to the flavor overload, roasted malt and a bit of bitter coffee notes work their way in. A small amount of general dark fruit flavor comes in later on in the sip. It starts out very sweet, and ends up being a bit more rounded by the end of the sip. The flavors work so well together.
Each sip is a reeducation about how the mouthfeel of a bourbon barrel stout should feel. Thick and rich, the barrel did nothing to reduce the impressiveness of this mouthfeel. The carbonation is nearly crushed by the thickness of the beer but retains a silky smooth quality.
Overall this is definitely a very well made bourbon barrel stout. It is definitely worth seeking out and having around. At this point I have not had it at different ages, but it is delicious with almost a year on it.
