This beer is a big and full bodied Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels with lots of roasted malts, but very balanced with heavy hops. Brewed with a top secret root, this beer has an amazingly complex flavor that you must wait for.

Bottle thanks to fear025. I had a bunch written then the stupid RB app froze and lost my rating. Pours inky dark. Aroma of chocolate coffee vanilla roasted malts bourbon. Silky mouth feel the taste of the base beer is still there but slightly sweeter.

2012 Vintage 12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip. Bourbon Plead the Fifth comes out of the bottle without any hurry, filling up my glass with an obsidian black liquid. Adjusting to an aggressive pour, I am able to encourage a small dark mocha head to form for a few minutes. It slowly gives way to a thin ring of dark froth around the edges and leaves just a couple spots of lace on the glass. The aroma at this stage has such a nice balance between the the chocolate and roasted notes from the stout and the character from the barrel. It almost feels like rich fudge is entering my nose as first, with roasted notes, a bit of coffee, lots of vanilla, and finally a smooth bourbon note. The flavor starts off with rich dark chocolate fudge, with vanilla and bourbon twisting their way in. As my palate adjusts to the flavor overload, roasted malt and a bit of bitter coffee notes work their way in. A small amount of general dark fruit flavor comes in later on in the sip. It starts out very sweet, and ends up being a bit more rounded by the end of the sip. The flavors work so well together. Each sip is a reeducation about how the mouthfeel of a bourbon barrel stout should feel. Thick and rich, the barrel did nothing to reduce the impressiveness of this mouthfeel. The carbonation is nearly crushed by the thickness of the beer but retains a silky smooth quality. Overall this is definitely a very well made bourbon barrel stout. It is definitely worth seeking out and having around. At this point I have not had it at different ages, but it is delicious with almost a year on it.

On tap at Michigan Summer Beer Fest. A fantastic beer by Dark Horse. Heavy, dark, and complex. A sipper I could sip all day.

’11 bottle enjoyed in Oct. ’13. From flandersned....thanks, Steve! Shared with friends along with Mikkeller George BA variants and I think this one came out of top for everyone, just for sheer richness and the silky carbonation. Nose of smooth bourbon, nice roasted malts, toasted wood, vanilla. Taste is the same, along with raisin, red dried berries. Great balance.

GABF 2012. Pours with a pitch black hued body with a tan head. Aromas are of raisins, brown sugar, bourbon, chocolate, cocoa powder, vanillin, and fudge. Flavors are rich, fudge, oak, lightly ashy, molasses, brown sugar. Thick, but well balanced by tannin, quite warming.

Thanks Al. Pours black with tan head. Deep chocolate, coffee, and sweet bourbon in the nose. Coffee and roasted almost smoked malt in the taste. Seemed to be a bit heavier on the smoke than bourbon. Also hints of vanilla. Thinner palate

On tap at Dark Horse’s VIP room via a tour of the brewery. Honestly the best beer I have ever tasted so far. Soo very smooth and bourbon flavor is definitely not overpowering. Really hope I get to have this sometime again soon.

Nose like bourbon county. Taste is bourbon county without any burn. Insanely smooth. This is top notch.

Bottle. Thanks to Cbuk1013. This is a nice step up from the standard version (which was great) without being flagrantly barrel aged. Perhaps the aging from 2011 helped. This beer has more body and richness on the palate with some added complexity to the aroma.

Draft at the Michigan Brewers Guild Fall Fest. Far and away the BEST BBA Stout I’ve ever had (and I’ve had ALOT of them). Bourbon, coffee, TONS of chocolate. Super smooth and so well balanced. NEED TO FIND MORE!
