3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Pours cloudy amber with an off-white frothy head. Nice lacing present. Aroma is somewhat muted; pineapple, maltiness, subtle pine notes. Flavor is more pronounced, with a heady maltiness still present, but cut nicely by a drying hoppiness and excellent fade to sharp bitterness at the back of the throat. Wish it had more to offer in regards to aroma, otherwise itís fine. Vastly exceeded by their Double Crooked Tree offering.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thin tan head that lasts, fair lacing. Seriously murky, amber?? color. Ugly ass brew, lotsa floaters. Lightly piney and grapefruit nose. Body is med/light, surprisingly. Soft carbonation, tad oily. Dry malts, slight caramel and the aforementioned hop flavors with a bit of stone fruits.. Dry finish tame bite but better than expected after pouring and seeing the poopied uglyness that was in front of me! 6er from Grape & Gourmet.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Served in a tulip glass at Express de Lyon. Pours a short beigeish head with wet cereals (dog food) aroma attack, which faints to bread aromas. Amber to kriek colored body. Specific in mouth with high bitterness and a light mix of his and roasted malts. Unusual but interesting. Not easy to match in a tasting or with food.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Hazy orangish, small offwhite froth. Malty aroma more so than the usual American IPA. Some citrus and a little caramel perhaps. Flavour has a more pronounced hop bitterness, a little grapefruit and caramel. Bitterness gets slightly citric later on.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
I donít tend to use the word ďmaltyĒ to describe an IPA, and if I do itís usually not a compliment. In the case of Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA itís definitely one of the more malty IPAs Iíve had, though itís not a bad beer. I enjoyed the malt character Ė maybe not immensely Ė but I did enjoy it. That being said, itís just a fine IPA; no more no less.
I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. It was bottled on 5/28/15 and cost $2.95 ($0.25 per ounce).
Appearance: Surprisingly dark orange to brown proper hue; extremely hazy body though no sediment is visible. Pours to a large, white, frothy head which laces and retains quite well.
Smell: Mostly piney notes with light floral aromatics. Considerable malt presences for the style.
Taste: Since this bottle is nearly three months old it might be understandable why itís noticeably malty for the style. Dark amber malt flavors are quite prominent here; not unlike those found in a traditional amber ale (in fact, this beer could easily be classified as such). I notice some caramel and toffee notes as well as a touch of chocolate or perhaps coffee. Itís still plenty hoppy, though. Mostly pine and resin character with a touch of earthy spiciness. The bitterness is enough to notice but mild enough to overlook. An enjoyable palette for sure, just not an amazing one.
Drinkability: The delivery of Dark Horse Crooked Tree IPA is pretty much what I expect in the style. Medium bodied with noticeable carbonation crispness. There is a bit of a sticky texture and a lingering sensation of hop oils after each swig. It doesnít seem to be quite as big as the 6.5% ABV on the label would have me believe, but itís sturdy enough to stand up to a meal or enjoy on its own.

Fairly strong piney hop bite, with a smidgen of malt to ease the bitterness. Would like a more pronounced aroma.

Bottle @home. Pours hazy amber with cloudy particles, small creamy lasting white head. Light to average malt presence, mostly caramel. Heavily hoppy, totally piney with some hints of citrus peel later on. Average alcohol, medium body, lively carbonation, bitter and dry finish. This lady here is a hoppy punch in the stomach!
