3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Hoppy aroma, dark clear amber, medium malty, a little less malty, more hop bitter than some imperial. Smooth finish.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle, 0.355l. Pours hazy brown color with large soapy tan-like head, nice lacing, yeast sediment and sparkling appearance. Aroma of tropical fruits, dark fruits, caramel, vanilla and herbs. Taste starts with sweet caramel and toasted malt, following is grainy and by dark fruits, mouthfeel is spicy, warming and alcoholic with bitter finish and long aftertaste. Full body, thick texture and average carbonation in palate. Too strong for my DIPA liking...

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours dark orange/copper with nice foamy head. Aroma: firstly the malt sweetness clearly dominates, followed by biscuit, pine tree, figs. Taste: again very malty, but also nice hoppy pine and herbs. Palate is nicely long. Alcohol is warming but weíll hidden.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Reviewed March 29, 2014.
A: Pours a very hazy copper color - I poured the dregs in this immediately (because I like cloudy IPAs), and the haziness in particular was downright hideous. So were the chunks of yeast sediment that fell to the bottom. On the plus side, the one-finger off-white colored head has excellent retention for 12%, and a soft texture that leaves behind plenty of lacing on the glass.
S: Intensely sweet, but also intensely boozy. This one genuinely pricks the nostrils with its aroma. The aforementioned alcohol notes seem to have a nice fruitiness instead of just being like pure rubbing alcohol. Ultimately, the dominant notes are caramel, brown sugar, and piny hops - the malt backbone would do a barleywine proud. I know exactly what kind of DIPA this is going to be. Hereís a hint: itís not going to be one of those lean 8% ones.
T: Subtly piny hops open this up, before the prodigious malt backbone really goes to town. The middle sees the hops become more grapefruity, even creating a bit of juiciness when combined with the sweet malts. Thereís some booziness on the finish to go along with the increase of both caramel and dank hops - I canít call the alcohol hidden, but I can call it well integrated. At first, I thought this was just another malty-ass DIPA with a bit of hops on the side, but the layering of the hops catch up to me: it goes from piny to citrusy to dank to even minty all in the span of a couple seconds. Given the fact that the flavors seem to switch from caramel to dark fruits to (mild) booze from sip to sip, Iíd even call it complex.
M: To the surprise of nobody, this is big, heavy, and sweet on the tongue. I mean, itís 12% (with the slight tingle to prove it), how easy drinking is this going to be? Medium carbonation tries its damnedest to lighten and dry the finish up; Iíd say itís about 25% successful. Itís not so heavy as to render it undrinkable, and itís not so sweet as to render it cloying. But, itís ridiculously chalky-feeling as well - my tongue is practically coated with yeast, and thatís what makes it a pure sipper.
O: This shouldnít work, but it just does. As a DIPA, itís fully aware of the fact that itís shameless and over the top, and doesnít try to be anything itís not. I respect that. Iím beginning to realize I have a soft spot for these ridiculous monster DIPAs like this, Devil Dancer, and Hi-Res. One beer is absolutely enough; thereís more going on here than there would be in three mediocre DIPAs.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A dark amber/mahogany body with a sweet malt nose. Caramel, some tropical fruit hops. Woody and sweet as well. Massively underwhelming for the ABVs. Maybe it was an old bottle?

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
A really malty double IPA with a complex palate. Full of taste and lingers almost into a new beer category. On tap at Warrens. Kicked the keg with my pour.
Lacks aroma and crispness to make it a 5.

35.5cl bottle. Cloudy golden orange colour with a small off-white head. Citrus, pine, caramel and malt in the aroma. Average carbonation and medium body. Taste is balanced with malty notes and hoppy notes. The alcohol is really not noticed. Overall, a very good beer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle picked up at The Bottle shop and drunk at home. As íDark Horse Double Crooked Tree IPAí, no date, ABV or other details, íages wellí. Dark murky brick red, opaque, small foamy off-white head. Aroma is sweet caramelised sugars, light floral, rose, rhubarb, stewed fruits. Body is smooth, soft carbonation. Taste is sweet dense caramel, tangy rhubarb, syrup, touch of booze, honey, American strong ale, spice, sherry notes. Just way too sweet for me. Not a DIPA. Itís on the strong ale / barley wine side of the spectrum. Big and bold. A sugar and alcohol bomb. Fine, but just not my type of thing.
