Pours a rich black with a half finger of brown head that almost immediately fades to naught. Initially I’m not getting any smoke on the nose. Definitely some roasted coffee, sugar, cream and hints of vanilla and cocoa there though. The beer tastes pretty mild as far as the smoke is concerned also. I don’t get any of the acrid or astringent flavors sometimes found in heavily roasted smoked beers. Roasted barley and char (more than smoke) come out front then a bit of hop bitterness and semi-dark chocolate come out midway and last through the finish.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Doodler (299) - Denver, Colorado, USA - APR 2, 2013
Grabbed this 12 oz bottle to go with some ribs tonite. Pours a deep black color with a nearly non-existent head. Nose is of smoked meat and soy sauce with some espresso roast notes. Tastes starts with charred wood and roasted barley, then sweet chocolate and molasses, finishing with a creamy - nearly nutty profile. Flavorful stuff. Anoher nice brew from Dark Horse.

12 oz. bottle courtesy of Queenholly. Nose is rich chocolate, burnt roasted malt and light smoke. Flavor is deep roasted chocolate, burnt coffee and some light peat underneath the roasted chocolate. Medium to full bodied with a dry texture. This works really well as an Imperial stout, not like a rauchbier. The peat malt is a hint and doesn’t overpower the brew. If you’re looking for smoke; get a bottle new. And then it still maybe faint. This works well for me as a stout. The bottled aged really nicely. Rich but not overly sweet. I enjoyed this.
3.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jaross (22) - - MAR 26, 2013
Deep largely opaque color. Very little head. This is how a good stout should look in the light, letting none in. Sweet molasses malty smell. Thick feel. Deep burnt smokey flavor. Very nice and not too sweet. A bbq in your mouth lingers for a while after.

Tap - Bottle Revolution (Raleigh)
Dark almost to the point of being black. Powerful coffee over- and under-tones with a smooth chocolatey aroma.
In one word - "yummy"...but not a beer to drink in quantity.

12oz bottle poured into glass. Super dark color with practically no head. Slightly smoky aroma but predominately roasted chocolate malts. Not too shabby.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown. Not much a head to speak of, just a tan ring around the edges.
Aroma: A mixture of sweet chocolaty malt and smokey ham. Depending one which time I put my nose in the glass, I get one or the other. Light herbal hopping.
Taste: Slightly burnt roast, smokey malt, not as hammy as it is on the nose. Dark chocolate and herbal hop finish with medium duration.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, moderate carbonation.
Overall: Very tasty, smokey without being a smoke-bomb, would love to have more of this.
4.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 mikkellund42 (363) - Vejle, DENMARK - MAR 16, 2013
Bottle. Pours pitch black with coffee brown head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee, soy sauce, gravy, Sunday roast, milk and faint hints if rubber. Taste is initially (and shortly) very sweet then medium bitter and light acidic and finally fruity sweet towards the end. Body is buttery with light carbonation. Finish is long, medium bitter/sweet and very complex with notes of roasted malt, dark (> 90 %) chocolate, chocolate mousse, espresso, caramelised figs. Excellent stout - goes well with a glass of Islay single malt!

Pours pitch black with a small layer of milk chocolate colored head. Smells roasted, smoky, hints of chocolate, and subtle coffee. Taste is smoked milk chocolate, like a specialty bar of artisan chocolate. Medium-to-full bodied with a smooth, silky texture and soft mouth-carbonation, Dark Horse Fore Smoked Stout finishes with a soft lingering smoky sweetness.
