Bottle at DuffmanSWs beer tasting. Pours black with a short light brown head. Aroma is lightly smoky with some dark bitter chocolate. Flavor is the same. Seasoned wood, coffee and chocolate, very roasty. Mouthfeel is big, smooth and creamy and carbonation is decent.

draft at sheffield’s. split this with nick yesterday. he observed that it has zero smoked character. i sensed a bit, but it was extremely remote, and i probably wouldn’t have even thought of smoke if i didnt know that going in. otherwise, the body and flavor were just like the 1 and 2. that is, thick and smooth, plenty of chocolate, reasonably well balanced, and quite delicious.

A wonderfully rich and thick beer with red visible only during the pour. Black and substantial with only a tan ring that leaves light lacing. Carbonation creates motion on top of the glass. The aroma is roasted notes with a bit of funk. Campfire smoke and peat follow and then a bit of fish. Flavor is powdery semi sweet chocolate and roasted notes. Some dark fruit, wood, and faint smoke. There is some sourness and chocolate in the aftertaste. Very nice.

Bottle. Pours black with a dense brown head. Smoked chocolate aroma with some caramel and coffee drifting in. Full body, chewy, with minimal carbonation. There almost vanilla or licorice component to the taste, along with all the bits the taste inherits from the aroma. Dry finish with some espresso, smoke and ash but in moderate quantities. The smokiness is subtle, so anyone looking for an uber-smoky beer will be disappointed, but otherwise it’s a tasty beer.

Bottle.A super dark black color beer with a medium light brown head that quickly drops to a ringlet, leaving just a bit of lace. Aroma of dark chocolate, with hints of licorice and maybe dates; the smoke is very subtle,it is there but just a hint.Flavor is dark chocolate, and coffee, the smokey flavor is much more prominent than I would have expected from the aroma, notes of rasins, molasses, and wood as well; after the swallow, the smoke becomes even more prominent but never dominates and the finish has a tobacco and bitter coffee character to it. Medium body with light carbonation and an oily/slick mouthfeel, not sticky at all.Very drinkable,I could not put my glass down. I knew I wanted to try this beer but knew nothing about it, I was blown away ! Nice job Dark Horse !

Black pour with a small, lasting, foamy, tan head. Moderate chocolate aroma with a balance of roasted malt and damp, smoky wood. The flavor is also chocolaty at first but then you quickly get a wave of dark roasted coffee, smoke, and wood. Creamy full body with subtle carbonation and a faint astringency.

12 oz bottle. Wasn’t really sure what they meant by smoked stout, but was interested enough to get it. Pours a jet black color with a small dark tan head that dissipated quickly. Smells of smoke and chocolate and malt. Tastes of smoke, chocolate, roasted coffee. Very smooth going down, and leaves a residual smoke behind. Overall very good though.
