4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pitch black color with a small brown head. The aroma and flavor were delightfully smoky (although not nearly as smoky as the traditional German smoked beers,) a little bit of tart chocolate, roasty coffee, and a sweet fruity (plum?) character. The feel was very crisp on the tongue...semi-dry finish. Thanks Wohlfs!

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pitch black oily pour. Dark tan, brown really, head. Beautiful brown lacing all over the glass. The aroma is smoke, peat, chococlate, and some espresso. The flavor is nice and meaty. Interesting presentation of the sweet malts, meaty smoke, and roasted bitterness. Very interesting and quite good. Full creamy body, dry roasty finish. I thought that a sweetmeat was a pastry or a piece of candy, this beer is sweetmeat. Yum. Thanks to wohlfs for the bottle!

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: JUL 24, 2005 Bottle. Iím kind of surprised no other brewer I know of has done a smoked stout. Oily black with a nice tan head that laces. You can smell the smoke from an arms length. Taste is nice & burnt caramel and malts. Silky smooth flavors of chocolate and ash. Fantastic.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle bought at Tiffanyís in Kalamazoo. Pours dark black, small dark brown head. Not much aroma, slight smoked/burnt hardwood with a hint of cocoa. Slightly sweet taste before the smoked malts and hops take over. Good hop balance for the style, finishes with a bitter woodsy flavor. Not as smoked as Iíd hoped when I saw the color, not a bad brew.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Thanks to wohlfs for the trade. Pours thick and black with a small dark brown head. Nose is light coffee, roasted malt, burnt wood, and dark, bittersweet chocolate. Taste is much sweeter than expected. More dark, bittersweet chcolate with light smokiness, coffee and roasted malts. Faint wood as well. Very creamy mouthfeel along with mild bitterness. Gets dry towards the end. Finish is a bit more smoke, roasted malt, chocolate and light coffee. Very good beer!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
bottle-pours a pitch black hue that was very oily during the pour. Looks very similar to the cream stout. This beer is topped with an awesome chocolate brown head. aroma of coca, roast, coffee, but where is the smoke? Flavors are very similar to the aroma, which is a good thing. The smoke shows up a little on the finish, but it is never in the forefront. The beer has a long burnt finish with hints of that smoke, but very subtle. Awesome palate once again. Lots of black patent malt in this one. Another winner from this fine brewery. This could be the least-known brewery on ratebeer and also the most under-rated. Does Michigan make a bad stout? Thanks again Woflhs!

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle: Very nice roasted coffee, chocolate, and light smoke. Pours a dark brown, virtually black, with light brown head that lasts a minute or so. Malty up front with a roasted coffee and decent smoke finish. All the smoke flavor is in the finish. Moderate cafe mocha aftertaste.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle couretesy of Marinaro500. Opaque black as the others in this series. Little head and carbonation, just like the others. Body is medium to full. Aroma is deeply roasted grains and just a hint of the smoked malt. Very smooth mouthfeel. Roasted/burnt grain and slight smoke towards the finish. Damn nice stout in their lineup of good stouts! Now if they would just release the Imperial!!!!!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
An interesting batch of stouts being offered from Dark Horse, and this one is no different. Similiar to the "Too," this one pours a very dark color. More hints of chocolate, coffee -- espresso roasted -- and earth. A lot of the smoke flavors didnít come through, and I wished they did. Nice consistency.
