3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: APR 13, 2008 Bottle - Pours pitch black with a tiny brown head that disappears quickly. Nice roasted coffee flavor. Little carbonation. Only dissapointment is that the mouthfeel is almost too smooth. It needs a legacy, something to remember is by. However overall a very nice beer. The tiny Darkhorse brewery always impresses.

12 oz bottle. Dark brown with a smooth tan head. Nose is faint grape, coffee and light smoke. Creamy mouthfeel with mild carb. Milk chocolate, grape Nehi and black coffee. A sweet smoke ties things together.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: DEC 3, 2007 Pours black with a minuscule brown head that immediately reduces to a mocha ring clinging to the edge of the glass. The nose is a sweet blend of roasted malt, chocolate and light peat. Medium-bodied, yet fairly thin, the mouthfeel is silky on the tongue until you swallow when some assertive carbonation pops out briefly transitioning into a lightly dry, roasted finish. The flavor follows the nose: sweet, roasted malt with solid notes of bittersweet chocolate and a light, peaty smokiness. Like the "Tres", I think this beer is listed in under the wrong style. The "smoke" in this beer is only a minor contributor to the character of this beer, but as itís name includes the word "smoked" Iím not surprised to see it labeled as such. After trying the 4 "smaller" Dark Horse "Holiday Stouts", Iíd have to say that these guys definitely know how to craft amazing stouts. Along with Bells and Founders, Dark Horse has given stout-lovers several solid examples of why Michigan has become a Mecca for beer geeks.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottled. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of chocolate and grapefruit, combined with light notes of smoke. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt and chocolate, leading to a slightly bitter finish.

Bottle from SpudClampDawg. Black with burgundy hue. Great roasted malt, light smoke, and some dark chocolate aroma. This is one good looking beer. The taste was the same with silky smooth texture. Impressive. DarkHorse makes damn fine beers.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured opaque black with a thin brown head. Sweet and roasty aroma with coffee notes. I didnít find the smoke to really be too big. The roast actually hid it some. The flavor was roasty with mild smoke and coffee on the tail. Medium bodied.

4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz bottle I think BrianK brough this to Dickinsonbeers, thanks Brian (I think). Poured a super pitch black but unfortunately it was as headless as Ichabod Crane. Great aroma of espresso, tar, nicotine and smoke. Super thick full bodiy with barely any carbonation. Not sure if it was slightly flat or if that was the brewers intention. Either way this was a super beer and if it was flat oh my god someone please get me a carbonated bottle because this rating would go through the roof.
