MrChris (110), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA May 5, 2007 Deep chocolate aromatic nose. Even the pour its self is black. Thin tan head, if you can call it that. This is some serious stout. A little chocolate up front. BIG long somewhat suripy toasted carmel and malted bitter ending. Nice warm lingering bitter aftertaste. Profile remains constant to the bottom of the glass. A serious stout for dark beer lovers.
beerbill (1318), Laurel, New York, USA Oct 4, 2008 12 oz. bottle thanks to a trade with yem25. Pours a dense black with a thin, sudsy dark brown head that completely vaporized after the first sip and left no lace at all. Pleasant aroma of roasted malt and chocolate with just a trace of smoke. I honestly don’t think I would have picked up the smoke in the aroma had I not read it on the label. The flavor is mostly roasted malt with a bit of chocolate and again very mild smoke. The smoke becomes more evident in the aftertaste and lingers briefly beyond the swallow. Full bodied. A decent stout, but its restrained flavors are a little disappointing. Swolf3 (90), Elkton, Maryland, USA Oct 3, 2008 Bottle shared with GMCC2181, Thanks. Black pour with nice head. Aroma was nice, mild smoke, roasted malts, and chocolate. Taste is similar with a nice smooth finish. A well balanced smoked brew by Dark Horse. GMCC2181 (422), Bear, Delaware, USA Oct 2, 2008 Bottle from stfun, thanks josh. Dark in color decent head. Aroma was smokey.... and roasted malts. Taste was the same. Smoke, chocolate and roasted malt and blended together very nicely. Texture that was oily smooth and easy to drink. I enjoyed this one. Thanks josh! esjaygee (820), Oak Creek, Wisconsin, USA Sep 28, 2008 Brown to black with a large brown slowly fading head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, sweet malt and mild smoke. Taste of malt, both roasted and sweet, coffee and mild smoke. For it being considered a smoked it’s not that smoky, which is why I probably like it more than I thought I would. It’s smooth, rich and sweet with mild lactic qualities you’d find in a sweet stout and finishes up mildly bitter. Good stuff. noncaloric (112), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Sep 27, 2008 Summary: Excellent chocolate-bodied stout, more ashy than smoked. Aroma: Dark fruits and chocolate, full bodied, stokes the anticipation. Appearance: Black, deep brown only at the edges, a few bubbles of head. Flavor: Strong mocha backbone; caramel, vanilla, and bourbon sparkle through at the front, some roast malt in the middle, turning ashy in the finish. Palate: Thick and smooth, with a dusty finish.
