3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rated 3/20/13. 12 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip.
A: Pours a black color; the pour itself looks quite dark and viscous. The head is a one finger light tan shade. It fades relatively quickly, leaving only minute lacing on the glass.
S: I definitely get a decent amount of oats on the nose, backed by a ton of roasted barley. Hints of chocolate, vanilla, and licorice are also present. Good, if muted.
T: Thereís a mild smoked quality to the opening flavors that I find intriguing. Afterwards, it develops a dominant note of licorice with tones of coffee and vanilla on the finish. Moderately enjoyable, but the flavors could use more singular distinctness; they all seem to blend together.
M: This one is surprisingly heavy on the palate, backed by a good silky smoothness and tons of lingering flavor. If someone called this an imperial stout, I wouldnít think twice either way. Despite the score, I really love the texture here - but the problem is, it doesnít match up with the mellow flavors particularly well, so I canít give a great score here.
O: Nothing amazing, but itís a solid offering. It kind of reminds me of a mediocre imperial stout, and thatís actually a compliment in this case.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Thick black beer with a one-finger light brown head that fades to a respectable ring. Smells of sweet caramel and roasty dark malts with hints of marzipan and vanilla. Sweet caramelly maltiness thats almost immediatley balanced by a bitter hops. The finish is a bit rough with the substantial hop bitteness and dark malts amplifying an astringency. 8% abv beer with medium-full bodied mouthfeel that doesnít come of sticky or filmy.

From StFun. Thanks! To snifter it pours a ruddy, dark brown with a razor thin/nonexistent off-khaki head. Aromas of molasses, Irish oatmeal, ash, booze, Bible paper, blueberry syrup, black tea, and brown sugar. Nice! Tastes bittersweet, charred, boozy, and earthy with notes of wet tobacco, rolled oats, coffee grounds, and tree bark. Slightly fruity by mid-palate to swallow. Overall enjoyable. First Dark Horse Iíve actually really liked.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours thick as fuck with a nicely sized tan head that eventually fades into a ring that sticks around. Aromas of Swedish death metal, bubonic plague, the Reign of King Cyrus. Sticky and thick as a black mamba, this is one you will remember for a while. Some things you just donít come back from. Alcohol is hidden, mouthfeel is as full as when you sucked that dude off for money back in the late í70ís because you needed the cash. Remember the back of that van? Yeah. Youíll never forget.

Total Wine, Fairfax 12oz ($2ish): Pours a deep black with a brown head. Aroma is dark chocolate, burnt oats and other grains, some sugar, and a little hit of dark coffee. Taste is pretty much as expected. If this is a sweet stout then the taste is really not that sweet at all. The bitterness is the controlling taste in this. Body is nice and creamy. Not too much carbonation. Easy to drink, even though it is a pretty heavy beer. íTis well done, yeah.
