Firemoose15 (540), Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 5, 2009 Bottle. Aroma mainly roast coffee and nut. Poured a dark brown light cap. Flavor of roasted smoked malts and coffee slight lactic tones as well. Palate is well balanced, light mouthfeel. Overall pretty good. corby112 (671), philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 4, 2009 Pours a deep dark hazelnut brown with coffee colored edgesand a 1.5 finger yellowish beige head that slowly fades into a thin lasting ring. Not much in the way of lacing.
Deep roasted cofee aroma with roasted taost notes, nut, milk chocolate and slight lactic creaminess.
Rich roasty flavor that becomes a bit more prominent as it warms up. Roasted smokey toasted nut with some slight lactic creaminess. Hazlenut, smoked malt, creamy milk chocolate, slight spice character and subtle hops. A bit thin for my liking but not to where is has too much of an affect on the beer. Nice balance of coffee, dark fruit notes and chocolate. The roasted character is not overbearing, which is a nice change of ace, adding complexity and avoiding the one dimensionality of many coffee beers. ABV well masked makng it pretty easy to drink. 13mikey (117), New Hope, Minnesota, USA Oct 25, 2009 Tap at the Happy Gnome. Appearance was peculiar... like coffee poured into dirty dishwater, thin white head. Aroma was that of coffee grounds, like the stuff left when you pull the filter out of the coffee maker. Slightly sweet, heavy coffee flavor. Palate is sweet turning into bitter. Very solid option if you like coffee beers. Beerman6686 (1259), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 23, 2009 This one poured a murky light brown color with an off white head. Aroma was lightly roasted malts, and light coffee. Flavor was smooth not burnt coffee upfront and then a sweet dark fruit finish. This one tasted more like a coffe abbey double than a dopplebock to me. Interesting tho. dkachur (2313), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Oct 18, 2009 12 ounce bottle from my Summer Secret Santa. Pours a hazy, murky looking orange-brown color with a thin head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of rich coffee, coffee grounds, caramel, cinnamon. Taste is bitter, rich roasted coffee, caramel, cinnamon and a slight leafy/vegetal note. Medium bodied. Good beer. travita (1851), Frisco, Texas, USA Oct 13, 2009 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. The smell is very heavily coffee, malts, roasty, and some alcohol. The look is clear, light brown in color with a beige colored head. The taste is sweet, malts, roasty, and more coffee. thirdeye11 (403), Texas, USA Oct 11, 2009 ( 12oz bottle thanks to bu11zeye) Pours light brown with hints of ruby and nice bubbles. Nose of coffee and heavy on the corn. Taste is sweet, spicy hops, light coffee and lingers with the coffee as well. Maybe the most disappointed I’ve been in a Dark Horse brew yet. BVery (444), Burnsville, Minnesota, USA Oct 10, 2009 TAP: opaque brown/red pour, aroma of coffee grounds. Taste is all coffee, with a body that’s heavier than Oscura but lighter than Coffee Bender. Pretty good stuff.
