This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

12oz bottle pours a cloudy reddish brown with a medium head. Big coffee aroma and flavor. Slightly watery with a metallic aftertaste. Ok, not bad.

Cap comes off with throaty top but no gushing. Has a huge head tho, on a deep amber body. Aroma is coffee and malts. Hints of caramel. Taste is malty with moderate to heavy notes of coffee. Well blended notes of light chocolate, toast and coffee. Lightly sweet finish. Medium body.

Pours a murky, mahogany color in body. Head is an inch and a beige/cream color. Lacing and head retention are wonderful. Smell is of roasted/burnt dark malts and coffee. Smoky wood or roasted chiles is also oddly detected. Sweet caramel candy/butterscotch balance the bitter coffee. Alcohol is hidden nicely. Initially tastes more like a standard bock rather than doppelbock. Lighter in sweetness and alcohol strength. Strong, sweet fruit/prune flavors are replaced by lighter malts and a serious bitter coffee kick. Smoky/burnt mesquite wood or fire roasted chiles leave a strange aftertaste. At 7% alcohol, it is incredibly smooth. Mouthfeel is on the lighter side with lots of carbonation. Head added some texture to the beer. Overall, I think this was a refreshing take on an old style of beer. Wouldn’t say this was the best doppelbock out there but I am slightly biased towards coffee beers. Drinks easily for 7% abv, not available locally but hoping to revisit this one in the future

Poured from bottle. Color is almost of maple syrup. Aroma is not very potent. Coffee is light in taste.

Weiches malziges Finish. 10/11/11/11/8/11

Medium brown color. Very carbonated pour. Very odd aroma. Reminds me of a hot sauce smell. Tastes fine. A little coffee flavor comes through over the caramel taste if the body. This beer is just ok.

UPDATED: JUL 8, 2014 Barwa: miedziana, klarowna. Piana biała, obfita, drobno pęcherzykowa, utrzymująca się. Wysycenie wysokie. Aromat: słodowość, karmel i dominująca nad nimi kawa. Rewelacja. Smak: karmelowa słodycz i wytrawna kawowa kontra. Świetne. Jeden z najlepszych, a z pewnością najciekwaszy koźlak, jakiego próbowałem. Tylko amerykanie mogli wymyslić takie połączenie. Pycha. Do tego piana rewelacyjna, utrzymująca się do końca !!!

More coffee than beer...it's good. Slight chocolate melt aftertaste. String coffee front with a light carbonation and heavy head. Love it. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Keg at Craft Clerko, 14/03/14. Chestnut brown with a good sized tan head that retains well. Nose carries good roast coffee notes, spice, dark malts, nutmeg, fruitloaf. Taste comprises light cocoa, toned down coffee compared to the nasal assault but still well evident, pepper, spice, candied fruit rinds. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, sweetish licks in the close. Solid stuff, delivers the coffee as promised!

355ml bottle (BierKompass.de) at 7.0% (6+:4:6:4:13=3.3+)
Nice reddy brown, large spongy head. Nice stale coffee grounds in the aroma, little more than that though. Simple palate, smoothish, with and rounded full roast, but crispish carbonation. Taste stale coffee grounds. Finish too. OK-ish, but a bit "why bother?". Alcohol completely totally hidden, respect for that. Kinda OK winter-time drink. But I’m left uninspired. Give me beer in my beer mug, and coffee in my coffee mug, thank you.
