This is a true dopplebock and Dark Horse Brewing’s only publicly distributed lager. It was so normal that we couldn’t stand it so we made it into a coffee dopplebock. Ha, take that Germany, with your Reinheitsgebot purity law! Anyway, we use fair trade organic coffee from our friends at The Ugly Mug Cafe in Ypsilanti, MI We did a label contest and opened it up to the public for this beer. We had so many awesome entries that we couldn’t just pick one winner so we have 2 labels for this beer. We stagger the bottles in the six packs but with no order in mind.

This is definitely different from other coffee-influenced beers that I’ve tried, being lighter on the palate. I think my bottle might be a bit old, as it doesn’t seem quite as good as described in most reviews. Aroma is kind of a weird some-malt, some coffee. Pours dark brown, with, in my case, a big, big head that dissipated fairly quickly. Taste is very subdued coffee, malt, some decent hops bitterness and what seems like a metallic taste. Hey, I can say I tried it. Most likely won’t try it again.

Four pack courtesy of Katie. Smell is really nice. Coffee is intense. Appearance is burnt caramel. Very crisp flavor profile, I guess I don’t drink much lager. Coffee is underwhelming. the head sticks around forever, which I like.

Bottle @ Studenterhuset, Århus. Pours dark brown with a creamy light tan head. Aroma of malt, coffee, caramel, bread, wood, but also a strong vegetables note that i offen get in coffee beers. Flavor is light sweet, malty, caramel, bread, nuts, nice strong coffee, dark bitter chocolate. Medium body, soft carbonation, some warming alcohol. For me taste is alot better than aroma here, no veggies. 251014

If you like coffee, this is the smell for you. Flavor wise, not so much. A little too sweet without the in tenseness if the coffee aroma. Beautiful to look at and pretty good to drink. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Aroma of bitter coffee malt. Hazy amber brown color, 5" bubbly ivory head that takes its sweet time dropping to 1/2", frothy waves of lace. Taste is sweet lactic malt with coffee and chocolate that glides through the palate to a bittersweet finish. The lingering "lees" turn sweeter as they fade. Really surprising in how balanced and drinkable it is.
