4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Dark Horse. Plead the 5th. Imperial stout.

A: Dark Opaque Hue, Passes No Light, Brown Head Ring, Mild Lacing
S: Deep Roasted Chocolate Malts, Caramel, Mild Brown Sugar
T: Chocolate Malts, Brown Sugar, Mild Bourbon
M: Average Carbonation, Full Bodied, Mildly Boozy
Overall, a pretty boozy base beer, with what seems like a bourbon nose even though there is not.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
35 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with a tan head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are chocolate, roasted malt, liquorice, a hint of vanilla, and a little chocolate – with a bitter finish. Hides ABV well.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle.Black with a small head. Slightly nutty with some sweetness. Not as overpowering as some beers of this strength with the alcohol slightly understated. A good one well worth checking out.

Pour a a beautiful pitch black with a reddish hue and a small dark tan head.
Aroma is pretty roasted, with a load of bitter dark chocolate to it. slight earthy notes with slight vanilla as well, followed by an overload of bitter espresso. Long and lingering coffee..
the taste is ever so slightly sweet up front, with a long and bitter aftertaste.
Medium-semifull bodied, with a semi flat carbonation.

Bottle@Home. Chocolate aroma. Black, light brown head, good lace, pours as thick as oil. Chocolate, black currant, coffee, soft bitter, sweetish, malty. Full, light warming. Flavourful and powerful.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2011 vintage 12oz bottle.
Aroma is fairly well balanced between roast and chocolate with neither being too assertive. Very faint soy sauce aroma with some light alcohol notes. Not much fruit esters; just a hint of raisin and prune.
Pours black with a moderately thick dark mocha head that has pretty pour retention but does linger on the edges. Light lacing and medium large legs.
Flavor is slightly sweet upfront with a moderate amount of dark and milk chocolate flavors. The roast becomes more apparent mid palate along with a light smoked meat character. Faint soy sauce again with moderate bitterness in the finish. Light tobacco and leather with medium light ashy notes in the finish. Some alcohol spice and lingering dark chocolate and light roast. Again not much fruitiness.
Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low, but present astringency and medium alcohol warmth.
Overall a pretty nice stout with a more toasty character than a lot of the big stouts coming out these days. It also is a bit better attenuated than some of the more popular imperial stouts. Faint oxidation is starting to show, but still not a major flavor or aroma component.

12oz poured into a snifter. Jet black with a tiny mocha head that disappears to nothing in seconds. Smell is licorice, molasses, roasted malt, and bakers chocolate. Taste is again with the licorice, bitter chocolate, and slight spent coffee grains. Thick, chewy, and the alcohol is well hidden. Tasty.
