Draft at Farmers Cabinet. Pitch black pour that started with a heaping amount of brown foam. Wow! Deep chocolate flavors. Coffee fudge. Toasted vanilla nut butter. Slight cigar and BBQ. Very rich with a huge palate. Great stuff! Canít wait to come across the Bourbon barrel version!

draught@Erzbierschof - black beer under a long lasting dark beige foam; roasted chocolatey malts, pralines and chestnuts; some hoppy notes pointing underneath; a solid malt backbone, strong sweetness balanced partially by a robust bitterness; lot of residual sweetness and long notes of cacao, black cherries; long roastiness - a bit more attenuation and it would be a great beer

tap. Black with two finger tan head. Absolutely beautiful stout. Smooth chocolate, and booze is completely masked. Scary how easy this is to drink. Delicious. Tons and tons of complex flavor.

Bottle. Black gold with a relatively laced brown head. A rich malty aroma with chocolate, caramel, light coffees, toffee, and roasted malts. A smooth body with a airy sparkle on the palate. It hides the alcohol well. Very nice.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Appearance: Midnight oil with a spectacular two finger head that stays around longer than Iíd ever expect out of an 11% beer. The head is brown and super creamy... looks outstanding.
Smell: Unbelievable. Coffee, chocolate, caramel, dark fruits, and even notes of ... cinnamon? Thereís an interesting note in there that I wasnít at all expecting. Smells fantastic.
Taste/feel: Monstrous... what else would be expected. Wow. Major bitterness, dark fruits, a lot of roastiness, and quite a lot of alcohol warmth on the finish. The smell was sweet and inviting, but the taste is just about the polar opposite. A lot of roast flavors with plenty of dark fruits, with an odd bitter, and somewhat sour finish. Alcohol is pretty noticeable in the taste as well. The hops in this one arenít there in the aroma, but come out in the taste with the bitterness on the end of each sip. Iím not sure what to make of this beer. It smells very nice (smelled great when I first poured and there was a large, pillowy head), but the taste is barely average. A lot of bitterness, with tons of warmth, and tastes of alcohol and dark fruits. Itís certainly not your average RIS. The feel of this beer is actually somewhat thin for an RIS, in my opinion. The beer doesnít coat the mouth very much, but it does have a nice "slickness" to it.
Iíll have you know that Iím not the biggest RIS fan, but this one is just odd. I had extremely high hopes after seeing it and, especially, smelling it, but Plead the Fifth just doesnít please my taste buds all that much. If you love a big and (somewhat) unusual beer, Plead the Fifth is a must try... itís quite distinctive. Though, I think, not for the best of reasons. At $3.50 per bottle, Iím certainly glad to have tried it (since I like to appreciate a big stout time-to-time), but Iím not sure when Iíd have it again... but if I did, Iíd keep it in a cellar to mellow it out... this thingís pretty harsh.

Bottle @ home. Pitch black colour with a small dark brown head. Smells roasty, chocolate, coffee.. pretty lovely. Tastes roasty, sweet, chocolate, coffee, maybe even some bourbon, definately wood. Lovely taste. Full body, nice carbo, slightly silky. Alcohol is noticable, but it complements the flavor.
