3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Half of a bottle that the owner of a local store got on his last visit to Marshall and very graciously split with me. There were only 7 left, they gave him this one, and the other 6 are going to GABF as part of Dark Horse’s first entry to GABF. Pours increadibly calm and dark oozing from the neck like oil and sits black with no activity. Aroma is all roasted malts, chocolate, and some coffee hiding the alcohol completely from the nose. Granted, this bottle is a couple years old since they haven’t brewed this in awhile so the advertised large wave of hops was not present in the aroma, or in the nose but it still has something going for it in its nice presentation of malts and dark fruits in the flavor. Sweet chocolate and roasted malt mixing with some raisin and a hint of some vanilla round out a beer that seems to have stood up pretty well. Other than the fact that there are no hop flavors or aroma I would say that the age has not added any off flavors. I understand that they are going to begin brewing this again this fall so I very much look forward to having this fresh.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Blind RIS experiment [Sample 8/20, 4/13/2015] Poured by Summer. Dark brown, thick, near black pour. Minimal ring of tan head, splotchy irregular lacing. Aroma: this smells great. Loads of chocolate, chewy dark fruit, molasses, licorice (licorice? yeah, I guess). Metal lurking in the background. Light roast. Mild oxidation. Taste is on the sweet side, with just enough roast to provide balance. Chewy chocolate molasses sweetness. Full body, silky texture, average carbonation. Lovely lasting taste. This is probably the best of the bunch so far, and I’m glad that after the first 5 things are starting to come back to beers I actually enjoy drinking.
Would pay: $4/bottle no problem; $6 on occasion.

Not a shock but the bourbon barrel version is way better. This is still pretty good though.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Quite smooth on the nose. Coffee, hint of some berries like black berries...? Blueberry? Taste is harsh in a food way. Warmth from alcohol. Bitterness and coffee but still some sweetness in the back. Still some black berry and blueberry.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
On tap at Cappy’s, arrived in a snifter.
Appearance: Arrived your typical imperial stout solid black, capped with a thick head of almost dark brown foam that lingered for an impressively long time. Lacing was insane.
Smell: Dark stone fruits and chocolate leap out of the glass to smack you across the nostrils and demand your full attention. Beneath them, there’s blackened grains and lightly roasted coffee, but it’s the fruit and chocolate that demand attention here.
Taste: Did I mention that the fruit and chocolate are attention hogs? Because they’re front and center in the taste as well, from first sip all the way through the finish. Plums, dark berries, and a mix of sweetened and super-dark chocolate dominate the flavor profile. Beneath them, swirls of lightly roasted coffee, cream, and scorched malt can be found.
Mouthfeel: Creamy and full, yet with an oddly watery finish.
Overall: This is a tasty stout. I’m not sure quite how the chocolate and fruit notes dominate every other aspect, but I am not complaining.

3.1 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
APPEARANCE - super black, with creamy dark brown head.
NOSE - smells like almost nothing. Very surprised.
FLAVOR - excellent finish, the start is a bit lite considering it’s color.
NOTES - surprisingly light on the tongue considering how it presents when you pour it. Or maybe I just can’t remember how good it is.

Shared bottle at "Exploding bottle tasting" at Petros place Chania. Pours almost pitch black with no head at all. Aroma is intense malty, raisins in port, vanilla and some distinct hops. Taste is the same as indicated by the aroma , lots of malty goodness, very sweet with some bittering hops for balance.Thick and creamy mouthfeel, with some chocolate delights as well, very good one.
