COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It's big and full bodied with lots of roasted malts and balanced with heavy hops to put this imperial in a league of its own.
Previously known as Dark Horse Imperial Stout.

Half of a bottle that the owner of a local store got on his last visit to Marshall and very graciously split with me. There were only 7 left, they gave him this one, and the other 6 are going to GABF as part of Dark Horse’s first entry to GABF. Pours increadibly calm and dark oozing from the neck like oil and sits black with no activity. Aroma is all roasted malts, chocolate, and some coffee hiding the alcohol completely from the nose. Granted, this bottle is a couple years old since they haven’t brewed this in awhile so the advertised large wave of hops was not present in the aroma, or in the nose but it still has something going for it in its nice presentation of malts and dark fruits in the flavor. Sweet chocolate and roasted malt mixing with some raisin and a hint of some vanilla round out a beer that seems to have stood up pretty well. Other than the fact that there are no hop flavors or aroma I would say that the age has not added any off flavors. I understand that they are going to begin brewing this again this fall so I very much look forward to having this fresh.

I think that I picked this up from Beers of Europe, consumed onboard DFDS Ferry Ijmuiden - Newcastle, Monday 29th September 2014. Pours black, pitch black, shark eye black with a tan head. Very smooth in mouth, creamy, soft roastiness, really drinkable for the abv. Some sweet liquorice and coffee. Good. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov16 3.6

"first impression at a mass tasting was not so good, but since we had it at the tail end, i didn’t score it til now, after a 2nd solo bottle, which was really quite enjoyable. pours near black and pretty thick. smells and tastes of char, dark fruit, heavy roast. quite sweet with a slight bitter smoke aftertaste. lots going on. while not one of my favorite impy’s, it was quite good."

Bottle@nkbar. Black, thick oily pour. Intesive dark dry chocolate, woody coffee. Full flavoured, bit ashy roasty charred. Sweetness, good bitters. Really intensive, surprisingly drinkable. Isn’t fluffy soft, more of a hard focused one. The ashy roasty gets a bit too much towards the end.

Snifter tap at Caliente in Pittsburgh. Big, bold, heavy in every category. Nothing fails in this perfect concoction of goodness. To be taken in small doses.

Smell is dark chocolate, faint vanilla, raisin, plus a mild mineral smell. Taste is the same plus mild alcohol and a bit of creamed coffee. Light to medium carbonation with medium body.

Bottle. Yes, this is the real thing. Black beer, with a thick and oily body. Heavy taste of roasted malt and dark cacao, but also with a nice bitterness. A real sipper, with an evolving aftertaste. Great beer.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 1/22/2013. Pours dense pitch black color with a small dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, molasses, toffee, toast, biscuit, nuttiness, light char, light dark fruits, and roasted earthiness. Incredible aromas with awesome complexity and balance of big dark, roasted, and bready malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, biscuit, nuttiness, light char, light dark fruits, and roasted earthiness. Fair amount of roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, molasses, toffee, toast, biscuit, nuttiness, light char, light dark fruits, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity and balance of big dark, roasted, and bready malt flavors; with a great roasted bitterness/sweetness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light carbonation and full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an incredible imperial stout! All around fantastic complexity and balance of big dark, roasted, and bready malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. An absolutely amazing offering.
