3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Expected roasted coffee notes in the aroma. No hops in the aroma. The texture oft the beer is pleasant with the malt being cut by the acidity of the roasted malts and hops. The flavor is good and well balanced. A good example of this this style in my view.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
(Dark Horse Plead the 5th Imperial Stout) Bottle 355 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 11%
Pitch black colour on the body, small dark brown head with okay retention, leaving a thin film on the surface and light lacing around the glass.
Aroma of milky chocolate, vanilla, chocolate cake, light fruity notes. Smells great.
Taste begins sweet, lots of chocolate, continues with roasted and burnt malts, ash, coal, the chocolate returns, very well hidden alcohol, no way it feels like an 11% beer, vanilla, again some fruity notes, excellent.
Medium thick body, carbonation on just the right levels, sticky on the palate.
Great beer, worths every cent.

Draft at Ale House. Pours thick and black with a thick brown head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, raisin. Flavor follows, lots of semi sweet chocolate, a fair amount of coffee a touch of raisin and a hint of licorice in the finish. Thick, almost chewy.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
12oz bottle from Erzbierschof. Well, this is probably the darkest beer I’ve ever had. And even though I usually don’t like Imperial Stouts, this one is really good. Complex, intense, long, full-bodied, and strong, but not as strong as the 11% ABV would suggest. Recommendation: Try this beer.

4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
Imperial stout coloured totally black and not allowing any light to shine through - only in the end when a chestnut brown rim appeared; thin, deep brown beige to even somewhat greyish head, which needed some gentle forcing to form but kept a thin beige layer over the beer for most of the time, though it all but disappeared eventually. Strong, seductive bouquet of all the good things one expects to find in an impy of this level: espresso and cappuccino, fondant chocolate and chocolate sauce, candied dates, mocha ice cream, cocoa powder, bayleaf, meat broth, baked banana, cognac, nutmeg, vanilla extract, raisins, crème au beurre, very old madera, kahlua, marzipan, dried autumn leaves, hazelnuts, iron but in a good way, butterscotch, orange peel, thyme, pipe tobacco... One of those great beers I could sniff for hours on end. Taste is dense and complex, setting in with an assortment of candied fruits and nuts overbrimmed with maple syrup, intense and profound from the first sip, thick and fatty, almost chewy mouthfeel, low carbo (as expected and desired in this style), some sourish accents not unlike lemon zest but very subtle, and then you are plunged into a thoroughly profound, intense, enchanting maltiness, nuts, chocolate, coffee beans, through which the sourish accent runs achieving some kind of ’relief’ from the heavy and overly satiating maltiness; pure mocha then unfolds in all its glory, filling the mouth cavity with black coffee of excellent quality, dominating a certain citrussy and leafy hop bitterness which is only here for balance and complexity. In the end, what you are left with is - apart from a feeling of awe - thick and strong but excellent espresso, alcohol playing its warming role in an almost charming but ever so seductive way and a spicy and earthy hoppiness. This is truly a fantastic imperial stout, one of the best examples I had so far. The intensity of the mocha and bitter chocolate in the aroma will remain with me for a long time.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Intensely light refusing dark. Rather mild for a beer that strong. Chocolate and roast aromas and a smell on bacon. Totally worth it.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours pitch black. Aroma: a lot of coffee and chocolate. Taste: this RIS is incredibly smooth, with dominating chocolate and coffee. Also very smooth in the palate, with the amount of ABV not noticeable at all. A very good beer.
