4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Picked up a four-pack at Cellar’s Wine & Spirits in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a beige head that has some nice retention and spotty lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, a touch of coffee, some vanilla and light molasses. Taste is full bodied, very light carbonation with flavors of dark chocolate, roasted dark malt, some quick vanishing vanilla bean, caramel and light coffee. Finish is thick and chewy with a mild hot chocolate and toasted malt aftertaste that even hides the alcohol presence.

Bottle at FoCo Stout Tasting 2013, courtesy of Ian. Thanks man! Pour is deep brown, almost black with a small brown head and decent lacing. Big dark chocolate, cocoa, dark fruity, licorice, a hint of smoke, caramel, earthy, and cherries in the aroma. Taste is toffee, earthy, bready, cocoa, dark cocoa, espresso, raisins, and figs with a light bitter finish. Slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Nice stuff.

64 oz growler from Barley Hopsters in Delaware, OH for $20 plus $5 growler. Opened tonight, 3 days from purchase. Totally opaque black; pours a one-finger, frothy one-finger medium-dark brown head can only be evoked from vigorous pouring and very rapidly dissipates into a medium ring. Aroma largely dark malt and chocolate; some caramel, and (happily) light roast and coffee. Flavor adds salt and licorice. You get a -sense- that this has alcohol from the body and flavor, but there’s really no heat or warmth from it at all. Certainly one of the best-disguised 12% brews I’ve had. Body is heavy, full, smooth, silky. This isn’t a particularly "exciting" beer, but it’s well above average and very good. I need -something- to stand out about this, and it just doesn’t; it’s more a mish-mash of a lot of different stout characteristics. If they aged this in bourbon barrels we might have something amazing here.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle: insanely dark & thick pour with a head that slowly rises, continuing long after I’m finished pouring; dark-tan with fine bubbles & lovely retention. Aroma is super deep, roasted coffee, charred espresso, bitter cocoa beans, a very light creamy sweetness, dark & bittersweet fudge, & a warming back-end. Taste contains light licorice, bitter coffee beans, charcoal, burnt & roasted malts, light hop character of leaves, ash, & herbs, mild chocolate... So robust & flavorful. Finish of char, roast, burnt coffee, bitter cocoa, warm booziness, & mild nuts. A truly badass stout.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Pours dark in color with a beige head. Sweetish mocha chocolate, more roasted notes, some burnt wood even in aroma. Nice. Bitter, dark chocolate in tast, some espresso and burnt fudge mixed with salty licorice in taste. Good combination here. Nice soft mouthfeel too. Quite longlasting roasted coffee and chocolatey aftertaste.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
No bottling information.
Appearance: The beer poured pitch black and it sits as such in my glass. No head is formed on the pour though a brown ring sits on the edges. Even on swirling only a coating is coaxed out, though it may be the darkest head I’ve ever seen.
Aroma: Fig dominates the aroma with bitter dark chocolate with a mild earthiness through it, slightly spicy. The aroma is too fig heavy for me, not enough roast or chocolate.
Taste: The intro is reminiscent of chocolate and creamer, though very light. There is a mildly spicy and earthy presence that cuts through the prominent fig and dark chocolate, separating them with the chocolate on bottom. The finish gets mildly chocolate, creamer as well, with prominent fig, though the fig isn’t as out of place in the flavor. The flavor does seem muddled though. The finish lingers of raisin for a bit after the sip with a mild chocolate and roasted presence. The alcohol is hid flawlessly.
Palate: Thick and viscous, this is like syrupy medicine with oatmeal. Carbonation is mild.
Overall: I enjoy this beer, but I wish the flavors were more coherent. I get hints of things here and there, but at this ABV I would have liked more prominent/bold flavors. I’m impressed that this isn’t sweet, I’d say semi-sweet, and the alcohol is masked completely. This is a good stout, one I would buy once a year if it were in my area.

Dark Horse. Plead the 5th. Imperial stout.

35 cl bottle @ home. Pours black with a tan head that leaves a little lacing. Aroma and flavour are chocolate, roasted malt, liquorice, a hint of vanilla, and a little chocolate – with a bitter finish. Hides ABV well.
