03.02.2016, 12 oz bottle @ home:
Small light brown creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly sweet roasted, dark sugar, minerals, dark malts, grass, caramel, hops, butterscotch, coffee, licorice. Taste is dry roasted, weeds, dark malts, burnt caramel, hops, bark, minerals, harsh coffee, licorice, paper. Longlasting harsh bitterness, watery mouthfeel. Not my cup of tea.

0,33 bottle purchased at the Hoppy imp. in Greece, consumed few months after in Kosovo. Black pour, brownish little foam with little retention and lacing. Nose: basically what you expect from an American black beer, roasted malts, coffee, grassy-herbal a bit piney which results in a combination of incense and floral notes. Mouth: the coffee is partially covered by the bitter character of this porter, the after taste results in a bit of licorice, anice too. Very interesting.

Dark black. Nose is dark roasted malts and chocolate. Taste follows, fairly malty. Expected this to be a black IPA with more bitter hops for some reason, but this is a solid porter.

Bottle at Heather’s (thanks baby). Brownish-black pour, thin espresso looking head, nose is baker’s chocolate, coffee, malt, roast. Soft carbonation, slick mouth feel, mildly sweet with pleasant balancing bitterness. Tasty.

Alengrin (4148) - BELGIUM - JAN 18, 2016
American robust porter generously shared by Jan of Weerspannige Brouwers. Thin but more or less stable, pale greyish beige head over a very dark, hazy mahogany beer, as good as black in appearance. Aroma of coffee grounds, green peppercorns, black tea, cured meat, toasted brown bread, caramel, dried leaves, nutmeg, bitter chocolate, soy sauce, dried porcini, black olive, haemoglobin. Umami onset, meaty and dried seaweed-like with a restrained candied date sweetness underneath as well as a salty soy sauce touch, soft carbo, oily, very smooth, full but slightly metallic mouthfeel, toasted and nutty malt ’bittersweetness’ ending in more roasted bitterness, a bit ashy even, spicy hops supporting this end bitterness and a dash of warming alcohol. Very pleasant black ale, in spite of the metallic touch, but too roasted and dry for a porter: I don’t see how this is not a stout, but then these styles have become virtually indistinguishable in the modern craft beer world anyway...

Huhzubendah (3337) - Washington DC, USA - JAN 7, 2016
Near black opaque body. Viscous with an oily, beige collar. Roast and chocolate scents leap out. Piney hop character emerges as the beer is allowed to warm a bit. Nice flavor. Medium bodied. Bitterness is gentle on the palate. Solid.
