jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Sep 1, 2008 @Indiana Beerfest-on tap-pours a rich shaving cream light brown head that laces and black color. Aroma is dark malt-bakers chocolate/anise/roasty/some coffee, slight sharpness/acidic. Taste is anise, sharpness/acidic, dark malt-bakers chocolate/anise/roasty/some coffee/oats. Chewy. Nice, but not my taste. Occasional. MaltOMeal (642), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Aug 31, 2008 12oz bottle courtesy of mmm/beer. This pours black with a brown head and some lacing. Nose is of roasted malts and coffee. Taste is more prominent than the nose and is of roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel was thick and left a dry aftertaste, but no harshness at all. Surprisingly thick for a porter. Very tasty. PolakPorter (82), Chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 31, 2008 Full bodied indeed. Big thick and heavy, just like the majority of Americans. Big ol’ head atop blacker than black liquidity. Dark dark dark chocolate, Colombian coffee mixed with dark fruits and roasted grain. Delicious. Will certainly keep me coming back. tjthresh (1746), Greenfield, Indiana, USA Aug 30, 2008 What a way to start the first Saturday of college football. The wife and kids are at the in-laws place, I have the Big Ten Network in HD, and this evening will be my first time meeting the Indianapolis RateBeer community. I’m jacked up. So I though I’d sit down on my own and try a beer that I probably should have had long ago.
The pour is pitch black with a thick brown head. A real nice layer of brown lace is left behind. Fairly nice aroma of roast, cream, berries, and a bit of chocolate. It reminds me of one of those canned coffee drinks. Strong, aggressive roasted flavor and very bitter. Med/full body with small carbonation bubbles that gives the beer a gritty mouthfeel. Long, bitter, roasted finish. Lots of character here. Pretty robust, yet easy to drink.
M Go Blue!!! travita (1861), Frisco, Texas, USA Aug 26, 2008 Black color with a good tan colored head. Smells of roast, burnt malts, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is a good roasted malt flavor, some darker malts, and coffee at the back of the mouth. Good beer. kseecs16 (865), Naperville, Illinois, USA Aug 26, 2008 Bottle. Pours a dark, dark brown with a super thin tan head. You can hear the fizziness as the carbonation releases. Very rich super malty aroma of milk chocolate and roasted malts. Flavor has a strong roast character with a bitter dark chocolate and cofffee finish. Very nice, this is not over powering but the flavors are all vibrant. Full creamy feel. brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Aug 22, 2008 Pours opaque black with a mocha colored, dense head that struggles out of solution.
The inch-tall foam sank slowly, leaving behind a thick wall of clingy lace. Traces of mahogany luminescence around the edges.
Aromatics start off with dark chocolate, espresso, roasted malts, and cocoa.
Brownie batter and a hint of nougat follow through.
Full bodied, thick and chewy, with a very creamy mouthfeel.
Bitter chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, and brownie bits lead off the pallet. A drying acridity follows through along with some warming alcohol.
Finishes with burnt brownie ends, bitter chocolate, and lingering roast.
Tasting like something between a big Imperial Porter and a small Imperial Stout.
dkachur (2318), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Aug 21, 2008 12 oz. bottle courtesy of mibirder. Thanks Sean! slightly viscous nearly black pour with a dark brown 1-finger head. Aroma of roasted malts, bitter coffee, chocolate and toffee. Taste is a big blast of coffee followed by bitter roasted malt. Some hop bitterness and an almost lactic sweetness in the finish. Medium bodied. Very pleasant.
