17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 22, 2008 Pours a slightly oily black with a small brown froth on top. Fantastic aroma, deep roasted malt and lots of smokey creamy chocolate... and yea dusty cardboard is a good descriptor for the aroma. First taste is both sweet and bitter... lots of character. Dark fruits, licorice, roasted malt, chocolate, some burnt malts, and sour cream. Definitely reminds me of a schwarz. Medium/full body with ample carbonation that makes it more of a drinker than a sipper. Not sticky at all. The hops play big but still let the malts carry the beer.... well crafted. mmmbeer (737), Austin, Texas, USA Jul 22, 2008 (Sampled 7-7-08) 12 oz. bottle poured into shaker- poured midnight black, HUGE off tan head formed and got in the way, very heavy roasted malt aroma with a slight note of molasses and coffee in the background. Hits the mouth with a heavy and wide body, the malt just dominates the tongue, some mild bitterness on the finish from a few hops and the malt kicking your butt one more time. Break out the smokes kids, it’s time to have some BEER! sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jul 11, 2008 Tasted 7/11/08. 12oz bottle. Dark brown hue with Spiraling layer of khaki head. Rich roasty nose. Cocoa and coffee. Mildly smokey and leather. Earthy with subtle esters. Medium to full bodied with a big roasty mouthfeel. Rolls between tart and bitter with an initial sweetness. Molassis and bitter coffee. Mild effervescence. Maybe a touch too burnt. Too bitter. Good hoppy character that I assume adds to the bitter palate. Mildly cloying finish that leaves a tingling bitterness and astringency on the back of the tongue. Solid! FunkyBrewster (436), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 11, 2008 Pours a dark brownish black with a nice thick tan brown head. Aroma is a bit smoky but mostly rich roasted malt, very strong and sweet. Flavor is just as rich from start to finish. Mostly dark roasted malts and bitter chocolate/coffee with some smokiness in the finish. Nice mouth feel. Thick and full body. Great all around porter, delicious balance of the sweet and the bitter with the smoky flavors. SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Jul 10, 2008 12 oz. bottle - thanks to pepsican for the trade; pours dark brown with thin head; roasty bitterness on the nose and drinks with a dry finish; great nose overall; creamy chocolate flavors; another great porter from the midwest; those folks know what they are doing out there riversideAK (2648), Shoreline, Washington, USA Jul 9, 2008 Bottle from pepsican. Thanks dude! Aroma of dark bittersweet chocolate and a ton of roast and a minute amount of dark fruit. Pours black with a brown head and great lacing. Initial flavor is of bittersweet chocolate. That is followed by a ton of roasted and burn malts that almost give it a light smokey effect. The hops are earthy and round this one out nicely. Smooth with a lingering roasty effect. Really freaking good. I want more of this stuff. WickerBrew (312), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 7, 2008 Very chocolaty porter. I almost could see this being a stout, it seems too smooth to be a porter. The lack of robustness really helps this go down. Another winner from Dark Horse. badbeer (432), Iowa, USA Jul 5, 2008 Pours an dark black color with a tan and darker brown colored head, looks nice and creamy. Smell is hoppy, roasty, and chocolatey. Taste is slightly astringent, but plenty of hops in there and a nice cocoa flavor and a roasty undertone to help balance things out, quite good. Mouthfeel is nice and thick with lower carbonation, just about perfect. A very solid beer that I plan on getting again. I think this one will get even better with age, a hypothesis I plan to test out.
