Snojerk321 (1914), San Diego, California, USA May 28, 2008 12oz bottle from Acknud. Pours opaque with a milk chocolate head. Nose of toffee and chocolate. Finish was very chocolaty and and creamy. bgburdman9 (822), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 27, 2008 I love these dark horse stouts and porters. They all pour pitch black from the bottle with a small tan head. Aroma was roasty, lightly burnt, chocolate. Flavor was very smooth and chocolatey. Had a decent body on it too and no alcohol was noticeable. I wish ohio and michigan could switch beer. mcbackus (725), Merritt Island, Florida, USA May 25, 2008 bottle: pours a very black with a good creamy espresso foam coloured head. aroma is a great roasty adn some fantastic dark chocolate. the flavours mirror the aroma jsut seem more poerful on the palate. the roast and dark chocolates are near perfect. the finish is excellent with more of the chocolate. kieleszd (83), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA May 23, 2008 Smells of sweet barley. Pours a thick chocolate head. Strong bitter palate. Very rewarding. This is a special porter. Dark Horse knows how to find unique notes roasted in intense flavors. Bravo. Kirsch (12), East Lansing, Michigan, USA May 21, 2008 Poured dark black with a nice caramel colored head. Aroma was subtle but favored a strong coffee smell. Taste was of strong coffee with a hint of dark chocolate. Coffee flavor was a bit overpowering at first but finished very well. Palate was smooth all the way through. mcmd (132), Louisville, Kentucky, USA May 19, 2008 Poured into pint glass - pitch black, mocha brown head dissipates to a thin film...porter or a stout? Subtle aromas of nuts and roasted malt. Wow this is good - flavors of sweet dark chocolate, roasted malt, black coffee bitter aftertaste, and yes hops as an afterthought. If we are calling this a straight up porter this may be the best I’ve had, and even better than most imperial stouts I’ve had. Love it. TomDecapolis (3127), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA May 19, 2008 Thanks to ogglethorp for the trade! Pours a deep with some chestnut notes and a medium cream/bubbly tan head that left some lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate, molasses, caramel, nuts, light vanilla, some coffee notes, roasted notes and sweet malt. Flavor of roasted almonds, coffee, chocolate, bitter roasted malt, molasses, bitter roasted malt, other mixed nuts, caramel and a touch of vanilla. Like a RIS without the alcohol burn you sometimes get. Well done! GAManiac (1123), Atlanta, Georgia, USA May 17, 2008 Pours pitch black with mahogany hints when held up to the light. Head is small but dense tan and dissipates quickly leaving decent lacing. This looks much like an RIS or a porter. Smell is of roasted coffee and malts with a bit of chocolate and sweet dark fruits. Really nice aroma. First taste is of sweet chocolate malts and caramel before giving way to a roasted coffee taste. Finish is fairly crisp with hops and coffee bitterness lingering a bit. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with decent carbonation. I really like this beer and would compare it to a decent RIS.
