Illini08 (528), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA Oct 18, 2006 Bottle from Duane. Poured midnight black with almost no head, just a small tan rim around the edge of the cup. Piney hops and lots of heavily roasted malts in the nose. First taste is a pretty overpowering amount of roasted flavors, but once your tongue gets used to it, this is a pretty smooth drinking beer. Roasted barley followed by a pretty dry, hoppy finish. Very tasty porter. black95tt (82), Doylestown, Ohio, USA Oct 18, 2006 Pours a very dark oily brown with a decent sized head. The aroma is of heavy roast and chocolate. Heavy roast, coffee, and subtle bittersweet bakers chocolate coat the tongue. No trace of hops. Quite a bit of body for a .....wait, what is this supposed to be? More stoutish than Porter, definitely not Shwartzbier. Very dry roasty bitter aftertaste. Body is somewhat oily. Alcohol is nicely masked. brewblackhole (1366), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Oct 15, 2006 Coffee and roasted barley aroma, black as can be, roasted coffeeish, taste with a touch of licorice, lots of roastedness in the aftertaste, Definitely not a schwarz, body is less then medium, that roasted, almost burnt taste is wonderful, gets a very dry and bitter in the finish. This stuff is special chimpscampee (556), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Oct 4, 2006 roasted barley, malts, and too much molasses, and bit of berry and not enough hoppiness for me. Yet is was pleasingly dry and bitter and creamy, sort of oily. I want to try more from this brewer. Are they intentionally trying to confuse via the label what this is? Goofy donkey cartoon label seems odd for this ambitious brew.
Nuffield (2718), Roseville, Minnesota, USA Sep 30, 2006 I picked this out of my "cellar" (a box in my garage), having focused entirely on the "black bier" and thinking that it was a schwarzbier. As soon as I poured it, I knew that wasn’t right, because it was so opaque, black, and oily that I looked at the bottle and saw "ale". It is deep with roast, burnt notes and a fair degree of hops, akin to a Rogue stout. The palate suggests more body that a porter, quite clearly. The palate is luscious and compelling, though the bitterness of the finish prevents this from being a "fast drinker". Still, it is a well crafted brew, whatever its style. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA Sep 30, 2006 12 oz bottle thanks to sprinkle. Lots of chocolate and roasty malt aroma coming off of this very black beer with a nice tan head. Flavors are very similar in bittersweet chocolate and some coffee. Burnt malt after taste too. One of my favortite porters so far. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 30, 2006 The pour reveals a deep black color with a thin creamy light brown head. Rich and sweet aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. Very good flavor of chocolate, hops and roasted malt with a solid bitter finish, it’s assertive and well-done. The body has a light to medium thickness with a dry mouthfeel and soft carbonation. A superb porter. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Sep 26, 2006 12 oz. bottle via trade with 1Fast STi - Pours a deep dark brown color with a nice tan head. Spotty lacing. Has a nice coffee, chocolate aroma. Has a strong roasted malt flavor. Leaves a dry, bitter aftertaste. Medium body. As porters go, this one is a little too bitter and dry for my liking. Still, a good beer overall. Thanks Blake.
