HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Mar 15, 2006 Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, my bottle, from Pintbypint. Poured thick opaque brown-black with a minimal but dark brown head. Wonderful aroma, very roasty, rich and oily - chestnuts, dark chocolate, burnt caramel malt, but most surprising was this incredible hot cinnamon (and some vanilla) spiciness blended with strong resiny hops. Taste was much more bitter than I expected, not near as much spice in the flavour, mostly burnt chocolate and coffee roastiness followed by a big kick of bitter resiny hops on the longish finish; unfortunately, there was an increasing tang of bottle metal as it warmed - maybe a less than fresh bottle? This had a very muscular body - more like an Impy Stout than a porter - with a flat, acidic quite complex mouthfeel - terrific beer, if this is really a porter, one of the best I’ve had - would like to try it again with a guaranteed fresh bottle to compare. antzman (313), Clarksville, Indiana, USA Mar 8, 2006 Updated: Jan 22, 2009Bottle. Pours a dark black with a trace of a tan head. The aroma is full of coffee malts and a little chocolate. The taste is a nice balance of coffee and chocolate, with a little roasted malt flavor. Very full bodied. I was a bit confused whether this was a black beer or a porter.... badgerben (3584), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Feb 28, 2006 Black color with a thin head. Good aroma of coffee and chocolate. The coffee really piles up in the taste with a dry chocolate and slightly burnt malt base. Dry and bitter finish. I honestly thought it was a light Imperial Stout. Damn tasty! MrManning (1634), London, Ontario, Canada Feb 27, 2006 MI brewers guild fest/06. Opaque black, with just a hint of light reaching through. Looks like a stout to me! Charred malt upfront in the nose, roasted coffee, dark rum , with oakey booze following. Spiced dark rum flavours aside bitter coffee beans, dark chocolate with oaked woodiness. A solid brew from one of the best at the fest! ElBorracho (472), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 26, 2006 On tap at the brewpub. These guys know how to do dark beers. Dark black with a foamy beige head with rocky rivers running through it. Charred wood, coffee, molasses, dark fruits and good hop kick to boot. Wow. RAYBOY01 (1812), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 21, 2006 Beautifully brewed porter in every way. Great black oily pour. Intense roasted aroma. Very pronounced roasted (make that, "burnt") flavors...dried fruits, raisins, figs, dates, espresso, molasses, and brown sugar. Hop bitterness there throughout, but strengthens in the finish. Enjoyed with El Borracho while touring the brewery. We drank, we looked at each other, and we said, "This might be my new favorite brewpub!" eboats (887), Omaha, Nebraska, USA Feb 20, 2006 Thanks to Sully for this one. Poured pitch black with a dark brown head. Aroma is sweet fruits and coffee. I actually noticed that pear seemed to be the dominant fruit. Flavor was mostly dark fruit: raisin and fig with some hints of chocolate. Chalky mouthfeel and slightly bitter and dry in the finish. Reminded me of the Hercule Stout, but better. apoptosis (1316), Long Island, New York, USA Feb 16, 2006 Very thick and rich for a porter...looks inviting! Great aroma: a lot of chocolate and even some espresso...a good dose of malts and vanilla. I really like it! The flavor is robust and more like an imperial porter, definetly. Great, creamy and thick mouthfeel. The vanilla comes through in the flavor, as does the coffee. Perfectly roasty. Yum!
