The aroma is chocolate with some roasted malt scents. Palatte is nearly perfect and the flavor is warm, dark and just as good as it smells. Hard to stop at just one growler. mcmd (148), Louisville, Kentucky, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 19, 2008 Poured into pint glass - pitch black, mocha brown head dissipates to a thin film...porter or a stout? Subtle aromas of nuts and roasted malt. Wow this is good - flavors of sweet dark chocolate, roasted malt, black coffee bitter aftertaste, and yes hops as an afterthought. If we are calling this a straight up porter this may be the best I’ve had, and even better than most imperial stouts I’ve had. Love it. trayns (242), Beverly Hills, Michigan, USA

Smell is not overwhelming or indicitive of the huge flavor. This porter is full of burnt coffee and chocolate taste. Great thin, clean finish from a huge robust porter. One of the better, and stronger, porters. durhambeer (1245), Durham, USA

Black pour with quickly receding tan/yellow head. Roasty, roasty, roasty aromas with tons of malt but some hop notes as well. On the nose and palate, roasted barley, chocolate malt, molasses, some coffee bitterness, hops, and toasted hazelnuts. Damn, this is good. kieleszd (83), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA

This is a special porter. Dark Horse knows how to find unique notes roasted in intense flavors. Bravo. gbdub (73), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 14, 2008 Nearly opaque brown-black with a thin brown head. Dark roast coffee and chocolate aroma - malty and smoky. Chocolate and especially coffee dominate the strong flavor, with smoke and a little hops lingering on the finish. Medium body. Excellent. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 11, 2008 Pours a dark brownish black with a nice thick tan brown head. Aroma is a bit smoky but mostly rich roasted malt, very strong and sweet. Flavor is just as rich from start to finish. Mostly dark roasted malts and bitter chocolate/coffee with some smokiness in the finish. Nice mouth feel. Thick and full body. Great all around porter, delicious balance of the sweet and the bitter with the smoky flavors.
