On tap at the brewpub in Marshall, MI. Poured with a good creamy, off white head, some lacing, and a mostly opaque red amber body, it looked how I’d expect. However, the herbs really take this red ale in a whole new direction. I was expecting a bit more on from the aroma because I enjoyed the mix of straight up herbal flower bouquet with the malty caramel cookies, and mild fruits. There just needed to be more of that. The palate is lightly carbonated and mildly creamy with a some cola aspects that as usual detract from the flavor in my opinion. Flavor notes can summed up in the same way as the aroma. Florals, herbals, caramels, nuts, cookie, and mild fruits. Finish is nicely balanced and hopped. Not bad, but could use some tweaks.

On tap
The unlabeled Dark Horse tap caught my eye while sitting at the bar. After a small sample I was hooked. The $3.50 cost didn’t hurt either. I wish I would have had more time to get another one as this beer takes time to really enjoy. The perfect lunch beer (if you only have one and plenty of time to kill) this reminds me why Dark Horse is such a great brewery.
Aroma / Appearance - Hazy amber with a light layer of head the body looks like a typical rye based beer. The aroma is pretty similar. Overall the mixture of hops and malt is slightly dominated by the bitter woodiness. Without being over the top it gives this a strong presence.
Flavor / Palate - The mouthfeel is light for 7% with an easy going bitter aftertaste. In between comes a calming texture with floral notes, peat, and a dry earthiness. It almost tastes like somebody liquified and then blended a rye sandwich into a keg. Too good to slam this beer comes into its own as it warms slightly. If I am in the area I will probably give it another try.

dark reddish brown with large tan head. nose of herbal hops. firm bitterness before dark crystal malt sweetness and a lot of herbal and spicy hop flavor. some residual sweetness, but nothing cloying. a decent/nice version of a crystal-heavy IPA or West-coast amber. I didn’t detect any obvious flavor from the spices.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a deep amber-brown colored body with a creamy, finger-width, beige head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is lighter caramels and floral berries. A touch of earthy citrus. Flavor is some caramel and a light chocolate with a touch of toast. Good amount of earth and a lighter citrus pine. Finishes sweet, floral, and hoppy with a moderate bitterness as this dries and leaves a lengthy aftertaste. Medium, smooth body with a light-medium carbonation. Very well balanced and easy drinking. Overall, a tasty beer. Pleasant mix of malts and hops. Nice one.
