Why is the Grim Reaper holding a mailbox? Well, that mailbox is from a dead Dark Horse beer. The Grim Reaper better know as "Death" was quite fond of our classic Sapient Summer Wheat Ale. When we changed it into a Belgian Style Triple, Death thought it would only be appropriate to bring something from that beer into this beer. So he picked the mailbox, and we weren’t about to argue with him. You can say what you want about him, but that Death sure has a big heart. So anyway...we brewed this beer with a Trappist yeast strain so it is very traditional. The flavors are incredibly complex with notes of mild fruit and finishes with a bit of clove. Although this beer is higher in alcohol it is very smooth and finishes dry on the palate.

Bottle. Golden hazy, whitish head. Garden fruityness, bit of christmas spicyness and a dash of grassyness in aroma. A bit rough perhaps. More on the sweeter fruitier side tastewise, with some yeasty spicy notes coming through. No sign of the abv though.

banana, yeast and some other fruits, pale gold body with a thin frothy white head, very, very sweet brown sugar typical belgian beer flavour bit dry and metallic in the finish. nope dont like it.

Finhead (1546) - OFallon, Illinois, USA - MAR 30, 2015
Hazy, golden pour with a small, white head. The aroma has fruity esters with mild spice. It has a light, smooth body with average carbonation. The taste is bittersweet with an easy finish. The alcohol content is very well-hidden.

Aroma of bready malt, ripe fruits, orange, apricots, spicy yeast, hoppy notes. Flavour is medium sweet with a moderate bitter finish. Not boozy at all. Nice fruity Tripel.

Bottle poured a clear golden amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of caramel, apple, spice and light yeast. Palate was medium bodied and crisp with a smooth finish. Flavors of caramel, spice, fruitiness and light yeast with a smooth lingering caramel finish.

Pour on tap at Busters on 28th, clear golden-orange pour with white head, aroma brought notes of yeast, dough, some orange, peach into some spice, biscuit, bread. Taste was a mix of Belgian yeast, clove, some slight banana into orange, peach, slight pear into some biscuit, finishing sweet, doughy.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2015 "Belgian style trippel" (incorrectly spelled with two p’s), the label says. I’ve had dozens of Belgian tripels so curious to find out what this tastes like... Pours a lightly hazy orange blonde with some dark dead yeast particles as well as a ’fog’ of minuscule living yeast bits floating around; medium, off-white, quite loose yet stable head. Aroma has a lot of green, sour apple (acetaldehyde), clear phenols, some sweaty, moist grains, unripe peaches, cloves, gin, honey, sweet white wine, peanuts, soap, cream cheese, earth, weeds and a (luckily) very faint, but recognizable hint of rotten egg or sewer water (H2S), probably linked to the dead yeast bits. After warming up a bit, a sweeter fruitiness appears (apricot, pineapple) as well as a pleasant, refreshing kind of ’vegetative’ acidity (tomato, sour berries). Crisp, somewhat neutral onset with a restrained, ’green’ fruitiness, apple and white grapes, smooth, slick mouthfeel with medium carbonation, body thinner than expected, mildly sourish accent (wheat?); a pleasant, slightly honeyish and slightly nutty malt sweetishness dominates the middle along with a bready, bit starchy yeastiness with tingling spicy ’stings’. Fairly phenolic finish, a bit chemical (plastic), but good flavour components as well, in the form of a leafy, earthy hop bitterishness (weaker than I had expected from an American beer), lingering malt sweetishness (even a hint of white candi sugar) and a touch of warming, ’jenever’-like alcohol, which otherwise stays well hidden (thus increasing drinkability). In all: not bad, but I expected more from this. Nonetheless, this does feel very ’Belgian’ indeed, I could not identify this as being American in a blind tasting - if you would tell me this is just another regional Belgian tripel, I’d be happy to believe it. I think I’ll stick with Westmalle Tripel, Sint-Bernardus Tripel or Chimay Triple instead.
