3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap: deep black color with ruby highlights; a thin layer of tan foam resides softly on top. Aroma is quite roasty & spiced... It’s got that root beer-ish smell to it, & I’m also getting hints of cinnamon & ginger. Borderline pumpkin-like in spice, but still erring more towards root beer. Light vanilla & maybe some oak, but I don’t get much bourbon in the aroma. The taste is smooth ginger, light sassafras, roasted malts, & some bitter cocoa dust in the back-end. Doesn’t really taste barrel aged... Maybe some vanilla influence, but not much bourbon or oak at all. Slightly astringent on the back-end. Pretty tasty & unique stout.

Miffed at ratings. On tap at Detroit Fall Beer Fest. Faint nose of root beer, but heavily unbalanced boozy cough syrup taste. Couldn’t finish a 3 oz pour. Strong, but in a bad way.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the 2012 Michigan Brewer’s Guild Winter Beer Festival, Grand Rapids. Similar to the non-aged version but with somewhat muted sarsaparilla and soft bourbon and oak notes. The aging reduced the medicinal aspects of the beer.

Sampled at EBF. With the name sporting "root beer" how could I pass that up. Sadly the root beer didn’t make as big as an appearance as I’d of liked. The flavor was good, very much like a standard imperial stout but the root beer didn’t really show up.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Aroma of cream soda, vanilla, and root beer. Pours black with absolutely no foam or carbonation. Tastes is very full of vanilla bean, black olives, with just a hint of coffee towards the end. There is too much going on and I have no idea what to make of this. It is sweet but there’s something sinister beneath it all.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Goblet draft pour on tap at City Provisions (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich near opaque black, thick and full with some brownish glow on the edges. A touch of ruby. No real head as it dissipates to near nothing, no lacing. Aromas are interesting, offering firm rootbeer, mellow oak, and gentle whiskey related spirit. Vanilla, spirit related heat, touches of black olive and permanent marker (Root Beer side of things). Sweet sticky vanilla, rootbeer, and some biscuity and toffee malts come into play as it warms a bit. Rich rootbeer like nose with kisses of spirit coming more into focus, vanilla, syrup, and sweet smooth elements. Initial is fuller end of medium bodied, a bit sticky and big with no real carbonation (which could aid it tremendously). Sticky toffee, caramel, and gentle cocoa as the rootbeer elements come out full into the middle, sticky sweetness, creamy cool vanilla, spice, and dark sticky sweet elements. Rich Rootbeer feel, touches of spirit and heat into the back of the middle and finish, wet oak, gentle tannins and more vanilla. Barrel presence is firm, cutting into a firm Rootbeer element. An odd beer that could use some carbonation. The flavors are rich and enjoyable, and the heat and barrle play are well done, but the lack of carbonation makes it a bit thick and chewy, which isn’t the most pleasant. Finish is lingering rootbeer, a boatload of vanilla, sticky dark non-descript malts that don’t add much character, and a mellow well integrated barrel heat and flavor. A mixed bag. Testudo wins the day, but largely because this lacks carbonation. Solid, could be better with some fine tuning.

Pour up in the loft at Dark Horse - lighting not great, but pretty much a black pour w/minimal head. Aroma is spicy, hint of licorice, and well, root beer! Intriguing to say the least... Flavor is pretty good actually, and I wasn’t expecting much. Root beer is very evident...some woodiness and general spice (can’t really pick out what). Palate is solid - would be very easy to drink if my palate weren’t trying to figure out what flavors just hit it. Low expectations, but this one actually performed admirably. Recent visit to Dark Horse did nothing but increase my feeling towards the operations here - kudos!
