3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 valpoaj (392) - Valparaiso, Indiana, USA - MAY 2, 2012
Pour up in the loft at Dark Horse - lighting not great, but pretty much a black pour w/minimal head. Aroma is spicy, hint of licorice, and well, root beer! Intriguing to say the least... Flavor is pretty good actually, and I wasn’t expecting much. Root beer is very evident...some woodiness and general spice (can’t really pick out what). Palate is solid - would be very easy to drink if my palate weren’t trying to figure out what flavors just hit it. Low expectations, but this one actually performed admirably. Recent visit to Dark Horse did nothing but increase my feeling towards the operations here - kudos!

Sampled at EBF on Saturday afternoon.
Pours a solid dark brown with a tan head. Smells of wintergreen and other non descript spices. It kind of smells like root beer. Well it kind of tastes like root beer too, but its a bit heavy on the spices. Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a spicy earthy mouthfeel. Kudos for thinking outside the box, but to heavy on the spices and this didn’t work for me.

A Sim rate (Extreme Beer Festival, Boston): Special for EBF - served with a dollop of Haagen Dazs vanilla ice cream. Tastes surprisingly savoury. Sage, cinnamon, ginger. So good. Amazing palate.
