3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Rated 4/3/13. 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.
A: Pours a hazy dark brown color. The head is a one finger offwhite shade with a soft-looking creaminess to it. Retention is decent given the strength, and thereís a bit of lacing left behind, too.
S: Big caramel here unsurprisingly. Thereís also an impressive dark fruit note here that I find enticing. Other notes of brown sugar, molasses, and toffee abound.
T: Strong tones of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar open the flavor profile up, with light smokiness and plum-like sweetness building up on the finish. The big problem isnít whatís here...itís what isnít here. While most certainly well made, it lacks in interesting qualities that could have made it great; nor is it particularly complex. The alcohol is hidden superbly, though.
M: Relatively thick, rich, and sweet on the palate, appropriately for the style. Carbonation is only prevalent when allowed to focus on the tongue.
O: Itís pretty good, yeah, but itís missing something - such as the vague stout-like qualities of Old Chub or the drinkable complexity of Dirty Bastard. As such, itís hard to recommend over those two.

Orange-brown pour, small off-white head. Aroma of minty dirty socks. Seriously. Flavor of nuts, raisins and mint. Bizarre.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark brown color with a medium sized, light tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel, nuts, cocoa, and light smoke. Taste of the same, sweeter caramel malt, cocoa, roast, some alcohol in the finish.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a very dark brown that turns a hazy garnet under intense light. Below normal head volume, poor lacing and retention.
Very good nose of bready notes over caramel. Intensity is a bit light and fails to deliver the complexity needed for an outstanding aroma for this style. At room temperature, very light notes of dark fruit are present.
Light medium body that is smooth. Superb carbonation level that is matched very well for the body providing a palate tickling effervescent middle and a nice prickly burst in the finish.
The flavor profile is very good, but like the nose, it lacks complexity. Bready flavor with a bit of char permeates. The middle brings a light subtle bitterness that is very well balanced with a slightly burned sweet caramel note. Alcohol is completely covered, no small task for 9.75% ABV. The finish is a slow, slightly sweet, fade of bready (pumpernickel comes to mind) malts and a charred note.

I like this beer a lot... Itís pretty much a regular old scotch ale. Itís a little less sweet than dirty bastard but pretty much just as good.

Bottle to glass, very little light tan head that left quickly, light brown in color. Aroma of malt, caramel. Medium sweet and a little bitter, a bit fizzy with a some what lasting bitter finish. Overall a pretty fair Scotch ale.
