A richly malty ale, with clear characteristics of dark chocolate and black malt, and hints of black licorice, ale fruitiness, and molasses in the finish.

Dark Horse does it again! Big fan of their Reserve Special Black Bier, and I’m pretty sure that is where this beer gets its inspiration from. Maybe a tad thin, but this is really well balanced and delicious.

Pour from a 12oz bottle. Dark brown ale, very inky - a 3 watt led flashlight held to the glass is barely visible! Aroma of dark chocolate and burnt malt. Taste is rich and subtly complex - sweet malts, dark chocolate, roasted grain, hints of licorice, most pronounced in the very finish. Rich and creamy palate. Exceptional!

12oz bottle - pours dark brown with beige head and spotty lacing. Nose is roasted malts. Flavor adds licorice, chocolate and a light fruitiness. Sweeter than I expect for the style, but it works for me. Nothing else comes to mind.

On tap at Cask, Pimlico. Yet again, a killer American craft brew shows up thousands of miles from home. The heart of the lucky ticker is warmed. On a slightly sodden late afternoon, the dark chocolate pour looked inviting. Loads of dark fruit in the nose, along with blackstrap molasses. Not sure that the two complement each other fully. Nice velvety mouthfeel, though the finish washes out a tad quickly. Licorice and chocolate in the taste, mild tartness from the fruit, at times clashing and at times working really nicely.

On tap at Mikkeller Bar. It pours next to black, topped by a small, dark beige head. Dried fruits, hints of licorice, some alcohol and roasted malts in the aroma. The flavor has roasted malts at first, then some dried fruits chime in, along with a touch of chocolate and coffee. There’s a pleasant bitterness too. It’s full-bodied, dryish and lightly warming on the palate, the warmth surprises me. It’s soft and pleasantly carbonated as well. Mostly roasted in the swallow. A beer starting off a bit boring, but it turns out to be a really nice and tasteful one. 120510

Mild roast followed with some nice dark chocolate. Heavy chocolate takes over the flavor with slight coffee. Chewy body.
