For starters, I love the delightfully quirky name of Thirsty Trout. I would expect no less from the Dark Horse brewery. I also had high expectations for the flavor of this brew, and Thirsty Trout met them. Before I get ahead of myself, this porter has brownish black body and a modest tan head. The aroma offers everything you’d expect from an American porter: cocoa nibs, coffee beans, and smoky malts. Up front, the flavor of Thirsty Trout reveals much of that chocolaty, roasty character, too. Surprises finally hit you in the finish. The brew ends on a sweet note with dark fruits, malt, and syrup. It’s a just-right finale to an expertly crafted porter.

Bottle: Black with a short, but thick, dark tan head. Tobacco, dark fruit, chocolate aroma. Taste is thick caramel malt, dark chocolate cake... A little licorice/mint aftertaste. Really tasty.

On tap. Minimal head with next to no lacing. Malty caramel aroma with caramel and coffee flavors. Nice licorice lingering finish. Carbonation is moderate for a good mouth feel and very, very good porter.

[Bottle] Wow, this one sure changed as it warmed. Started out really bland and forgettable, but after sitting for awhile it became quite enjoyable. Anise up front which then melds into roasted malt and some chocolate for a lasting finish. Nothing crazy or incredibly unique; just a very solid porter. Aroma is pretty restrained, even after warming--dusty, slight alcohol, anise, and mild smoke. Fairly thin, long finish. Overall, a really nice porter that I’m glad I gave a chance to warm up.

Nice dark color and appealing aroma. Flavor is light and not that heavy. I would say it is okay.
