3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
I expected more, basically in the nose and in the looking. Nevertheless, the mouthfeel is great with notes of chocolate, vanilla and a creamy finish really good. But, taking the overall, it remains unbalanced. A pity.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle. Pours completely black with a big tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and chocolate. Taste of roasted malt, chocolate, licorice and something salty. Aftertaste is of lightly roasted malt, licorice and salt. Medium body, average carbonation and slightly bitter finish. Itís not bad, but Iím glad Iím having this before I go to bed...because itís nothing worth getting out of bed for. Above average, but thatís about it.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Right away you can tell that this porter is heavy in body, sweet, and thick in roasted malt content. Itís black, nearly solid if it wasnít for a hint of orange glowing at the bottom edges of the glass, with an almost medium brown colored head.
The nose is exactly that: heavily roasted but not burnt, sweet, and soft, with clear hints of barley, licorice, sweet pit fruit juice, and a touch of cocoa. The aroma is pretty complex, and really raises your expectations for the rest of the experience. First, the body is perfect. Itís thick, almost like you want to take a nibble out of it, but incredibly smooth, almost velvety but not as dense as most velvety porters. Itís so smooth that it doesnít sit in the mouth long. It hangs around just long enough to let its fine balance of perfectly-dosed malts and fruity sweetness. Man, this is addictive.
It finishes full in flavor, with more fruit, a hint of cocoa, and molasses, making for an experience 100 times more impressive than the label implies.

UPDATED: OCT 1, 2014 For starters, I love the delightfully quirky name of Thirsty Trout. Given this was from Dark Horse, I had high expectations this brew. Thirsty Trout met them. Before I get ahead of myself, this porter has a brownish black body and a modest tan head. The aroma offers what youíd expect from an American porter: cocoa nibs, coffee beans, and smoky malts. At the front of the mouth, the flavor of Thirsty Trout reveals much of that chocolaty, roasty character. The finish has some surprises. Thirsty Trout ends on a sweet note with dark fruits, malt, and syrup. Itís a just-right finale to an expertly crafted porter.
