Pint at the brewery. A solid porter that is worth a try. Finishes a little bitter, and not the molasses that I was expecting.

Flight on tap at Tribes (Mokena, IL). Pours a rich blackish hue, dark and near opaque, some ruby touches on the bottom and edges, a frothy tannish near brown head dies to a decent film, laces ok overall. Aromas are cocoa and roasted malts, gentle with a good touch of fruity qualities, faint anise, some gentle coffee, and more cocoa. Touches of sweet molasses and toffee, toast. Nice but lighter. Initial is heavier end of medium bodied, enveloping the palate with cocoa and roast, gentle anise and some fruit. Fairly dry up front, gentle hops and roast, toast and dry bakers chocolate. Middle shows some of the sweetness, but still remains quite dry, anise and faint dark fruit come into the fold, some ashy roast, earth, and gentle cocoa linger on. Really nice, and I don’t even like anise/black licorice essence much. Dry and good body, good flavors, fairly complex, coats the palate but doesn’t overpower in body or sweetness. I’m a fan.

tap - Pours near black with a lingering tan head. It smells of dark roast malt, chocolate, and a little coffee. It tastes of roasted malt, chocolate, and a hint of licorice. The hops balance is good. Medium bodied, good mouthfeel, I really enjoyed it.

Draft at 4 Elf Release Party at the brewery. Pours a dark brown. Good sized light brown head. Nutty aroma. Flavor is of chocolate, caramel and nuts. Very smooth and silky due to the chocolate. Overall very solid beer tha probably gets overlooked due to its highly rated cousins the Dark Horse stouts. Hope to have an opportunity to try again.

Girlfriend ordered this at the hopcat and i finished it. Thin dark brown color with tan head. Light chocolate aroma. Flavor is kind of chocolatey, malty. Pretty decent porter, but I expected a lot more from Dark Horse.
