Poured an opaque black color with a small, dark tan head that left light lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, smoke, and some dried fruits. Taste of tons of chocolate, some smoke, light vanilla, and a dry roastiness, capped off by a touch of alcohol in the finish.

12 oz bottle from Bello Vino in Ann Arbor, MI (December 2005), released into a Unibroue glass at cellar temperature. Pours inky, utterly black with a very small, diminishing quite dark head....bitter, roasty dark chocolate, licorice and burnt molasses in the surprisingly rough and strong nose....very thick and oily on the tongue, with little carbonation, which to my taste suits the burnt, roasty character in the flavor pretty well: dark unsweetened chocolate, cowboy coffee are the usual suspects along with dry pine and charred oak, the blackened grain really seeming prominent as well....this is quite excellent, but doesn’t really seem to fit the sweet stout categorization....until it gets fairly warm, when a fair amount of vanilla & sweeter cocoa show up towards the finish.....though even then they are muted and almost disappear under the roasty onslaught.

Not much of a browqn head on this this black ale, but who cares? Nice roasted aroma full of roasted barley and malt, chocolate, vanilla, burnt wood, coffee, and a hit of almond bitterness. All that is there in the flavor with the merest trace of the sturdy abv. Nice bittersweet finish. Had I been told that this this was an Imperial, I would have responded, "And a damned fine one, too."

Thanks Nancy (mamabeer) and Tom! This beer has a nicely developed aroma of vanilla, coffee, and toffee. It is black with a dark brown head that fades fast. This beer has a nice robust coffee taste that is both bitter and sweet. It fades a tad bitter as the coffee taste settles on the throat to be enjoyed well after swallowing.

Bottle. Pours pitch black with dark brown head. Heavy on the roasts and coffee along with bitter chocolate and charcoal. Finishes with a nice lingering bitterness. ABV completely hidden. Another fine brew from these guys.

Black as night pour topped by a thin brown head that dissapates quickly. Chocolate and coffee and roasted malts in the nose. Chocolate/vanilla/honey/almonds/and chocolate milk in flavor. Big ABV so well hidden as to be non-existant. Very lightly bittered. Very reminiscent of Founders Breakfast Stout, maybe even better!
