3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: DEC 19, 2012 12 oz bottle courtesy of MI2CA. Poured into a small tulip glass with small brown head. Again the blackest color. Aroma is soft roastiness, emphasis on soft. I get lactose but more like spoiled cider and a prune juice aspect. Mouthfeel is undercarbonated which adds to the prune juice similarity. Taste is just slightly spoiled milk, weird fruitiness (did I say prune enough), and finishes with slight coffee bitterness, which stays for the aftertaste. The hinting coffee leaves me wanting more, the undercarbonation is not too desirable and this beer is my first disappointment of the 4 stout beers (maybe my expectations were too high).
I am thinking the original rating was an off bottle. Bought this at a store in North Chicago. Poured completely black with a dark brown, large head. Still looks good. The bottom line on this beer is its all bitter malt, not a sweet stout at all. I feel like I am smelling burning stove and drinking bitter black patent husk. Too one dimensional. Alcohol well hidden.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
This pours nearly black with a very small brown head. This brew is lightly carbonated with a medium/thin body. The flavor is of lightly roasted nuts and some chocolate.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from ogglethorp; nose of roasty coffee and bittersweet chocolate; opaque black with only a few cinnamon colored bubbles; Nice thick body, but little carbonation; flavor of coffee, roastiness, light sweetness, and some chocolate. Excellent flavor, needs more gas!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Little head retention on this black beast. The pour opens up notes of milk chocolate, heavy cream, bitter chocolate and lightly roasted coffee. Silky texture plays off low carbonation making this liquid velvet. A little more CO2 would be nice to help define the roasted malts. The coffee becomes more pronounced in the body, cut nicely by the sweetness of the lactose. Very drinkable and mind boggling how they crammed enough malt into this to get to 8%.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle thanks to ogglethorp! Pours a deep, deep, deep brownish/black with an extremely dense brown head. Nice roasty aromas, bitterness. Nice flavor but a bit or an odd aftertaste, sort of chalky and medicinal. Great mouthfeel and a nice finish. Overall a good beer.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Lovely aroma. Not immediately in love with it, but by the second sip, I liked it more. Roasty flavor, with a bit of sweetness. Long chocolate finish. Nice body. I would appreciate a bit more carbonation (almost none to speak of), but it doesn’t ruin the beer at all.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12oz bottle, courtesy of artusory. Thanks, Ryan! Pours a dark black core, medium tan head with patchy retention at the edges. Marshmallow and roasted malts in the aroma, hints of milk chocolate. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: milk chocolate, wet and roasted malts; pleasant, citrus hop bitterness balancing things out. Long, creamy and milk chocolate finish.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Nice thick black pour, very little head save for a few tan bubbles at the edges. Sweet chocolate aroma, hint of coffee. Moderately thick mouthfeel. Nice smooth roast chocolate flavor with a mild sour turn at the end from the lactose. Could’ve used some extra body, but this was still very good.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
dark horse knows how to make a sexy looking stout. thick black great dark brown head. great job. probably the best smelling of any cream/milk stout i have had. most smell like spoiled milk. not this one. very nice coffee with cream aroma also a hint of campfire wood smoke. the milk flavor isnt overbearing it brings a very nice sweet creamy balance to the bitter coffee flavor. bittersweet creamy coffee finish with a medium dry end. medium body. smooth but seems a bit thin. with a bit more weight i would have easily given the palate a 5. straightforward but very nice. hands down the best milk stout i have had thus far.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: NOV 1, 2007 Bottle, poured black with a few bubbles, I could count them on one hand, roasted malt and sweet rise to the nostrils, hint of chocolate, dark chocolate and vanilla, some bitter chocolate and coffee fragrances, roasted malt and chocolate flavors, light bite in each drink, smooth on the palate, a touch thin in the mouth otherwise a nice drink.
