Number Too - This beer is made with milk sugar (lactose) which gives this beer a nice creamy mouth feel which mingles with hints of chocolate and roasty flavors.

This was black in color and poured practically no head at all and what did emerge quickly faded away. Scents of smoke, coffee, milk chocolate and sweet caramel. The palate was quite smooth fading to a dry/bitter hop-driven finish. It starts off big but fades as the finish doesn’t quite deliver.

No head at all from a vigorous pour. No carbonation. Sweet and rich aroma. Milk chocolate, prunes, dark roasted grains and lots of sweet caramel. Quite the enticing aroma. Thick, syrupy and black body. Big coffee flavor. Very strong. Quite unexpected since it was not noted in the aroma. Lots of roasted grains, bitter dark chocolate and a bit of smoked venison. Palate is a little thinner than expected. Alcohol is hidden very well. Finishes roasty and dry. A pretty good stout but a little bit lifeless.

12 oz bottle, trade extra from Stine. This pours completely black in color with a small brown head. Aroma is nice and roasty, with chocolate, caramel and earth. Taste is also roasty, with dry chocolate, caramel. Body is medium to full with caramel and light lactose sweetness. Hints of chalk, earth, and yeast. Finishes with roasty and a light hop bitterness. Dark Horse did a good job with these stouts, only minor complaint was that they could have been just a bit more carbonated. Thanks again Eben.

Inky black pour with no transparency retains only a thread of brown foam around the rim. Aroma is all thick, rustic roasted malt; firm and beefy like meat fresh from the coals. Wisps of wild rice, tart red apple, chocolate hazelnuts, and cinnamon gather up in the bonfire smoke. Flavor brings it a little weakly with a hollow tone, but warms up quickly into a varied but predictable set of tastes. These are fairly needly and woodsy, like black licorice, brown sugar, molasses and holly leaves lingering in the wet soil. Lactic flavors are very quiet, which if not exercised toward something purposefully soured tend to work counterintuitively in a rich, roasty stout, so this is a pleasant quality. With warmth, oatmeal cookie dough, caramel, and toffee provide a soft touch of sweetness to balance the bitter, vegetal coffee and earth tones of roasted malt. Slight citrus hop and red berry interludes here and there. Medium to full palate is creamy and soft, with a lot of lively fruit and winey dimensions. Very dry, cocoa, tobacco and dark roast finish. Solid.

Pours black with an off-white head. Quite sweet. Some burnt and roasted malt aromas. Also aromas of dates. Medium to full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel. Soft carboantion. Dry, toasted finish with some sweetness.

12oz. bottle from my 07 Secret Santa: Pours a small light brown head with fair retention and lacing too boot. Black colored brew. Nose has notes of light blue berry, roast, chocolate and is a bit earthy as well. Body is medium, lightly oily on the palate, slick, coating and a tad chalky. Nice malty sweetness balanced out with roasty, bittersweet chocolate flavors, some charred notes, light fruitiness, cocoa and malted milk. Dry, roasty finish with a hint of coffee. Nice brew. Thanks Jeremy!

12oz Bottle. Heavy roast and butter cream aroma. Pretty straightforward. Pours black and rim of coffee and cream. Flavor is a bold roast, quite black and edging espresso. Not too sweet, but the milky qualities are noticeable. Rich and full. Some palatable ash. Fermented well. A well done, heavily roasted stout with minimal hop presence, as expected.

Really a fantastic beer. Super strong creamy notes in the nose, on the tongue, and on the palate. Strong roasted malts and coffee/chocolate notes. Mouthfeel is simply perfect. Creamy and full. This is what most cream stouts dream of being.

12oz. bottle, with thanks to Gregis for hauling this back from Indy for me! Pours a dark black with a frothy dark brown head that dissipates to a large bubbly covering, moderate lacing. Aroma is roasty and sweet, with coffee grounds, milk chocolate and a touch of molasses. Flavor is milk chocolate, roast and slightly smoky, with that telltale milk stout lactose aftertaste. Not a big fan of milk stouts as it is, but the lactose was a bit much on this one.

Oily as I suppose it should be. Roasted, but not too much. I didn’t get much coffee notes, but some coa-coa puffs. This is a little rough going down the hatch. Decent looking with a thin head.
