Oily as I suppose it should be. Roasted, but not too much. I didn’t get much coffee notes, but some coa-coa puffs. This is a little rough going down the hatch. Decent looking with a thin head.

12oz. bottle. Nose is full of creamy chocolate, the malts dark, roasty, toffeeish and sweet, some espresso notes and very faint smoke. Opaque black color with a tan ring of a head. Flavor is roasty, semi-sweet, full of chocolate and toffee, some coffeeish roast and lacto sweetness peeking through, the finish sweet with lingering dark roastiness. Smooth and thick on the palate, body is medium-full. Tasty. Reminiscent of Bell’s Double Cream Stout. Thanks Chris!

Bottle. Creamy chocolate espresso aroma. Thick black color with minimal head. Light creamy burnt coffee flavor with moderate astringency/bitterness. A light body than the appearance would have led me to expect. A bit weak and on the rough side.

Courtesy of Secret Santa ’07. Opaque black pour with little to no head. Aroma of coffee/roastiness. Tastes almost like a milk stout, chocolate/milky and almost peanut-butter taste. Very impressed with this brew, never had a Dark Horse beer before. Thanks Santa!

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz. bottle, no bottling/freshness date, but I know this is the new label 2007 release, sampled in a pint glass. The ABV is 8%.
Poured as black as motor oil with a tight, compact brown head that slowly settled into a thin sudsy lacing. A light amount of splotchy lace at the top of the glass.
Lush smelling nose of heavily roasted dark malts and milk sugar. The smells really mesh together well, roasted dark coffee, lightly burnt chocolate and sweet milky lactose, quite appealing.
There is enough of an low temperature warmth to make it’s 8% ABV noticeable on the tongue and in back of the mouth. Smooth moderate feeling body with an airy creaminess, this is one easy sipper, quite pleasant on a cold mid-December night. The milk sugar lactose flavor does a lot to sweeten the roasted, almost burnt, dark malts, easing their nature malty bitterness. Dark roast coffee and bittersweet dark chocolate buoyed by the sugary milk flavor make this cream stout unique and highly enjoyable. In the aftertaste some coffee nuttiness lingers a bit in the palate.
An excellent holiday stout from Dark Horse, recommended if you like dark roasted tasting malty stouts.

12 oz. bottle shared by csbosox at the 12/7 tasting at Indra’s. Pour is black, with a quickly disappearing tan head. Aroma of creamy, roasty coffee notes, and some sourness. Taste is a nice creamy mouth feel with some roasty coffee around the edges. Good flavor start to finish.

Pours a beautiful ebony with a small but frothy brown head. Chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, Breyer’s vanilla. Nice creamy texture and fairly full-bodied. A little of the Whoppers malt balls in the flavor but not as sweet. Quite quaffable.
