Old_Mr_Crow (1016), Seattle, Washington, USA May 12, 2008 Bottle courtesy of tetrik -- thanks! This is my first of the series, and if the others are this good I’m in for a real treat as I work my way through them.
Pours a ridiculous inky black with a gorgeous deep brown head. Lovely roasty nose, splendid gently sweet (Thai iced coffee) flavor, chocolate , plenty of roast in the finish, just a tiny bit smoky, and enough hops to make their mark melting with the coffee close. Ah, this is a fine, fine stout. Bravo!
GAManiac (297), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Sep 7, 2008 Pours pitch black with a short-lived mocha head that recedes to a ring leaving very little lacing. Aroma is mostly roasted malts with a hint of lactose in the form of bakers chocolate. The taste has a coffee bitterness up front before giving way to a substantial burnt malt backbone. The finish brings back the bitterness, but in a pretty unpleasant chalky way. The mouthfeel is a tad watery with very little carbonation. This is a pretty average stout and not as enjoyable as the first in the series for me. I’m hoping for more with the rest of the series. noncaloric (52), Madison, Wisconsin, USA Sep 6, 2008 Bottle, hurricane glass. Aroma of roast barley and berries. Pours dark brown, black in the glass, with a brief-lived coffee-brown head. No lacing to speak of. Starts off with dark fruits, cranberries and cola, before turning to a sweet creaminess, that, if not nearly as viscous, evokes draining the liquid from a bowl of peaches and cream. Vanilla and dark chocolate, with hints of bright coffee in the finish. Drinks very smooth, with some prickles of carbonation. mmm///beer (546), Austin, Texas, USA Sep 5, 2008 12 oz. bottle from B&B (Grand Rapids, MI) served in pint glass- poured blacker than motor oil that hasn’t been changed in a year, low carbonation, dark brownish tan head 5mm thick formed but went away a little too quickly. Aroma of coffee, roasted malt, and heavy cream. Hits the mouth with a wide body, malt is very tasty, bit of cream in the middle with bakers chocolate in the background, finish slowly fades like a late summer sunset on the pier in Ludington. Yeah, DH rocks, tell me something that I didn’t learn a LONG time ago... jbrus (4128), Delft, Netherlands Aug 29, 2008 Bottle@Home. Very strong chocolate and coffee aroma. Very black, brown small head, fair lace. Very sweet, loads of coffee, roasted, light bitter. Medium body, bit dusty. Very flavorful, very drinkable, not exceptional but good. nimbleprop (581), Washington, Washington DC, USA Aug 26, 2008 Scored this in my Secret Santa package. Thanks Saint Nick! 12oz bottle pours an oily, opaque black with a thin, slgihtly beige head that settled into a faint ring around the glass. Aroma of roasted malts, toast, licorice, molasses, coffee, brown sugar and slight chocolate. Flavor are similar, toasted, roasted malts at the forefront with only slight coffee (with a cream dimension), licorice and mexican chocolate. Heavy on the palate and creamy.
