1 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 2/20 mullet (849) - Melbourne, - JUL 21, 2005
My bottle says 5.2%. Very high carbonation and on the pale end of the brown ale scale - nowhere near a porter in colour (or flavour for that matter). Big foamy head looks like but it’s mostly due to the ridiculous amount of CO2 coming out of solution. Same old sharp yeasty aroma as the other Dark Isles. I managed to find something of interest in all their other beers but there’s only so many times you can drink infected beer and still enjoy it. I hit the wall with this one - it was just unpleasant. Rubbery smell, plastic taste. It doesn’t even taste like the beer under the infection would be all that good, though at least it does vaguely remind me of Rodenbach... And appropriate beer to drink whilst reading Wild Brews, but unfortunately most of it went down the drain.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 bluevegie (2928) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - SEP 16, 2007
Good size off-white head on a ruby red body. Taste has some dried apricots with not enough porter characters that I like. Not bad in fact a little different just doesnt do a lot for me. Keep the honey out and increase the malt flavours more.
3.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jkm (209) - AUSTRALIA - JUL 8, 2007
Dark red/brown in colour with a thin off-white head which rapidly dispates. Medium carbonation and body. Flavour, sweet & malty with hints of coffee, those hints becoming stronger in the aftertaste. Mildly bitter with a nice finish. Very enjoyable. - (330ml Brown glass bottle)
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Thylacine (517) - Tasmania, AUSTRALIA - JUL 2, 2007
Dark reddish brown, Frothy beige/tan head which soon dies back to a thin layer., Medium body with low to medium carbonation with a slightly effervescent feel on the tongue. Sweet roasty malty flavours and touch of coffee and spicy honey and a hint of alcohol. There’s only a very light bitterness in the finish leaving the malt to dominate but not sickly sweet like some. Much better than the Dark Isle Black lager.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Lunkie (1129) - Glen Iris, AUSTRALIA - JAN 17, 2006
Sweet malt hop aroma. Clear brown colour with good head nad lacing. Sweet malt smokey flavour. Smooth palate.
1.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20 vanvenlo (852) - Glen Iris, AUSTRALIA - JAN 15, 2006
20 Nov 05 - Malt metallic aroma. Cloudy medium brown colour, good beige head and suds lacing. Hugely metallic and weird medicinal flavours. Thickish palate, but the bitter smokey metallic tatse lingers. I guess the Leatherwood Honey is bad news.
2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 chriso (7065) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 5, 2005
Bottle at RBESG grand tasting, August 2005. Once you get over the fact that this isn’t really much like a porter, this isn’t too bad (although others seem to disagree). Coppery colour and quite hoppy. Bit it also has lots of sweet caramel too. Although my experience of Australian beers is limited, they don’t seem to do roasty. Slightly thin. Not great but perfectly palatable. Perhaps I am being rather charitable because I found it a welcome change after a long run of heavy bocks and Scandinavian winter beers.
1.9 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 7/20 tiggmtl (4475) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - OCT 3, 2005
Woody, catty aroma has musty notes of honey. Clear light copper coloured body with decent and lasting fine bubbled head. Honey-like, fruity flavour with moderate finishing bitterness. Light body with lively carbonation that prickles the tongue. Bottle sampled at RBESG 2005.
2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20 duff (5483) - St, Margarets, Greater London, ENGLAND - SEP 13, 2005
Bottle. Not really a porter in my book. The colour is amber for starters, not a deep brown that i normally associate with porters. Sweet honey, caramel, and some sort of tinned fruit (not sure what). Not very good.
2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 9/20 Emil (6070) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - AUG 22, 2005
Bottle. Amber colour with a baige head. Sweet caramel aroma and a light sweet fruitycaramel taste. Medium body and a light sweet finish.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ungstrup (23961) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - AUG 17, 2005
An unclear brown beer with a disappearing yellow head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel, a dry finish, and a carbonated mouthfeel.
