blipp (801), Grand Island, New York, USA May 6, 2008 Cask at Tap and Mallet in Rochester. Poured orange amber with a bubbly off white head. Light aroma of sweet fruit and smoke. Body is a bit to thin. Flavor is lightly smoked malt, a touch of chestnut and has and earthy bitterness in the finish. Nice.
JoeMcPhee (3807), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Sep 21, 2008 Cask at Turf Tavern. Deep amber beer. Aroma is quite smoky and rich. Light crystal malt sweetness and a touch of earthy hops. Flavour is also quite nice and smoky with a soft rauchy smokiness over a rich spicy hoppiness. It’s fairly astringent/tannic on the back, but this seems to add a certain fullness of palate that might not be there otherwise. I quite like it. Perfect handpumped as usual. Small head. Malty aroma with some burnt or smoke (coud be the rye). Caramell and some hop tase. The bitterness comes after some time. asheft (923), Marburg, Germany May 31, 2008 [cask]
Strong roasted malt and hazelnut aroma. Clear dark amber with a thin ring of white. Smokey (non-peat) flavour along with roasty/toasty malt and barely perceptible hops. A little mouth coating, mild carbonation, light to medium body. maeib (3997), Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, England Feb 22, 2008 Cask conditioned - gravity dispense - Merton Winter BF. An amber coloured beer with an off-white head. Unbelivably smoky for its style both in aroma and taste. Almost as if the beer had been mixed up for the rauch or some of the ingredients hybridized. Having said that and regardless of any mistakes it was pretty damn good in all ways.
